Dad bought an unlocked iPhone 4 and it did not have FaceTime. He wants to use FaceTime to chat with the grandkids and I need some help on how to to go about it.
Can someone pls point me in the right direction?
Thanks a lot.

FaceTime's not a separate app on iPhone: http://www.apple.com/iphone/built-in-apps/facetime.html http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4319

Has the other side got an iPod touch, iPad 2 or iPhone 4 or above?
If not then you can download Skype and videoconference via a PC/mac
We have a friend who has an unlocked iPhone 4 from Taiwan which also is missing facetime app. I am assuming some countries prohibit the app? Maybe upgrading to iOS 5 would solve it, or try calling apple care.

It's integrated into the Phone and Contacts apps, and isn't a separate app: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4319

Did you activate facetime on the iphone?
Use Bonzo's link, scroll down and follow the directions to activate facetime in settings. Once it's activated there will be a facetime button in each contact in contacts. Use that to start a facetime "call".
Here's a nice link showing how to do it but it doesn't mention waiting for the activation but it does show the facetime button in a contact. http://artoftheiphone.com/2010/06/24/basics-how-to-activate-facetime-on-the-iphone/
Just explain to dad that he can't really call Anne Hathaway :)
I think we're all assuming that activation on Dad's iphone is the issue, but if there are more questions, just ask here.

The Middle East version of the iPhone has FaceTime disabled. You can enable it with various programs in the Cydia app store.

ELP is El Paso (I had to look it up.) :)
I don't think that's the issue. :D

I have an iPhone 4 that was unlocked/jailbroken. No issues with facetime. Through Cydia you can get an app that over-rides the need to be on WiFi.

The only FaceTime-locked iPhones are the ones sold in some middle-eastern countries.. It's only a matter of activating it under "settings" for the rest of the world..

I went under settings -- and there is not a "activate FaceTime" option.
On the other hand -- what do you guys recommend to as a screen cleaner for iMacs?

Go to Settings, scroll down, there is no Facetime item on the main settings page? If you press that, it opens a new menu page. That page should have a button to turn facetime on.
What does it say in settings/general/about/version?
Why not just make an appointment with a genius at the Apple store? That's probably your best option here.

This is what I plan of doing but I am accumulating a bunch of questions together and then going in at one time and getting all the answers.

If you're using iOS5 then it will under settings further down, just after the "Phone" option. Turn FaceTime on and you're good to go, provided the other party has their facetime turned on as well.
If you're using an earlier firmware, then the FaceTime activation is under the "Phone" settings.

Thank you -- I did find it under the phone option but it is now "waiting for activation" for 2 days.
What to do next?
Thanks

I never could get my jailbroken/unlocked iphone 3g to activate facetime on t-mobile.
But my factory unlocked iphone 4 activated almost instantly (also on a t-mo pre-paid no data plan). I did it at home and probably had a wifi connection at the time, but supposedly the carrier has to send some sms messages back to the phone to complete the activation, unless they changed how the process works.
Did you take it in to the Apple Store?

There are several workarounds to resolve that "waiting for activation" problem.
Happened to my iphone when i tried to use iMessage.
My suggestion is to search for that "waiting for activation" problem and see what people did to resolve it.
For mine, i had to set my phone info to myself in contacts.
Previously, the phone info was blank.
Once that happened, i had to enable Facetime and iMessage to get rid of the "waiting for activation"
Other people had other workarounds which solved their problem.
