AirTran Airways A+ Rewards - GA Upgrades Non-Rev Employees Before Elites

Upgrade success but boy did I have to fight for it. Checked in online at T-23 Hours. When I arrived at the ticket counter to check my bags, I asked how Elite upgrades were looking. The TA told me that I was the first Elite to check-in and that there were five seats still available. It was now two hours prior to departure.

I then proceeded through security and to the gate area where I found a seat adjacent to the gate desk. I opened my iPad and started surfing FT. I also opened up the seatmap for my flight so that I could monitor BC seat availability. At about 75 minutes prior to departure another Elite member approaches the desk and inquires about upgrades. The GA shoos him off and tells him to come back at T-40 minutes.

Here's where it gets good. Within the next 15 minutes I see three separate AirTran employees (wearing their One Luv lanyards and IDs) approach the desk. I check the seatmap as each of them is being helped and one by one BC seats disappear. We're now down to one BC seat (I'm guessing the other seat was assigned elsewhere) so I approach the desk and inquire. The TA tells me that he doesn't think there are any more BC seats left. "According to the seatmap, 1D is still open", I tell him. He begrudgingly assigns the seat to me. "There would probably be more available if they weren't being given to non-revs", I snap. The GA replies that "Non-revs on company business take priority" and that "Business Class is going away anyway". I tell him "I'm quite aware of that and that I'll be going away along with those BC seats. Southwest has no Luv for me."

The guy behind me looks disappointed and returns to his seat. I share my observations regarding the non-revs. Before the other Elite can get up and approach the desk, the GA calls him over and miraculously finds him a BC seat (the one that was assigned elsewhere that I could not track).

So I board the plane, knowing that I am the only paying passenger in row 1. My seatmate strikes up a conversation. "So you fly AirTran a lot?" he asks. "I used to but I am ending the relationship now that Southwest has taken over." He tells me that he's heard that from a lot of Elites. We continue our banter regarding the acquisition. He asks where I'm heading and I tell him that I live in Atlanta. I ask about his destination and he tells me that he's meeting some friends for a Monday Night Football party in Atlanta (so much for official company business) and that he's flying back to MCO on Tuesday morning.

Knowing that this GA has lied to me, I call AirTran Customer Relations. I relayed the above information to the CR representative. To my surprise, the representative was defensive of AirTran and did his best to cover for the GA's actions. He started by telling me that all of the employees were deadheading. Only when it got to the point of undeniable proof on my part did the CR agent admit that policy had been broken. But the agent was also very dismissive with me. "Since you weren't denied the upgrade, I'm not sure what you're expecting from us", he said. I told him that I shouldn't have to watchdog and fight for an Elite benefit regardless of whether it's going away next year or next week. I also told him that I was not seeking compensation, just some hope that AirTran would follow-up with the GA. The CR rep promised me nothing, offered a half-hearted apology and hung up.

I have one more round trip later this month (only booked it to earn enough credits to complete an award ticket) and then the award trip. After that I'm through with AirTran for good. It was a nice little airline before the Texas overlords took over. They can keep their Luv.

Wow. Thanks for sharing, plagwate. It's one thing for a new FT user to post something like this, but since it's you, I know it's legit. You are one of the respected participants on this board.

I have also shifted most business away from FL, but I do have a few upcoming trips, so I'll keep a close eye on the seatmaps.

Wow. I've got some business trips coming up that I haven't booked yet, but after reading this, I'm going to book them on Delta with my lowly Silver status and hope to make Gold there.

The worst thing is for all the egalitarian talk from New Mexico Airlines, and how they do not believe in BC, they have reduced the sales on economy seats. In the other thread, I mention how their so called great 35/65/95 sale is not so great for intermediate routes you want booked in the next two or three weeks. Wieth the old Airtran Tuesday-Thurs sales, I could get a ticket to Balt and pay the upgrade free to BC (in case I wasnt sure of the free upgrade) and it would not be more than 10 dollars more expensive than the current "sale" fares from Atl to Baltimore or Philly in the next few weeks.

What is worse is Delta will now be thrilled to raise their short term fares too. They will match SW on the leisure month in advance fares, but will jack up the short advance ticket prices(two to three weeks in advance).

This is very bad for Atlanta travelers.

I just PM'ed you with some incisive social commentary. I kept it off list because I don't want to start a flame war. You are welcome to share as you wish.

It is Airtran's policy that Employees on company business or Dead Head flight crew are positive space coach class and can be upgraded at the last minute IF seats are available. They are not to be cleared before Elite's. I will never say it doesn't happen, but it shouldn't, and it is definently not Airtran's policy to do so.

That was my understanding too. It would seem the MCO Gate Agents and Customer Relations staff need some retraining. There were at least three Elite members cheated out of their upgrades on that flight.

I think part of the reason for abuse of this type is the station. MCO is home to FL's headquarters. Thus, there is probably an eagerness on the part of some front-line staff to please the administration. Regardless, that type of behavior is inexcusable.

Thank you for being so up front and honest. At least now we know what the official policy is.

An interesting experience during a recent morning flying BWI-ATL. The process of handing out 40 minute upgrades was going quite slowly; seemed much more involved than usual.

Eventually, I received a BP at less than 15 minutes prior and went aboard. Sitting in Business were a uniformed AirTran pilot, a uniformed SWA pilot and a uniformed SWA flight attendant. When we got to ATL, two AirTran flight attendants riding in coach came forward while I waited to go back and get my overhead bag.

Not saying anything was out of order, but the times are a'changing.

I realize there is a lot of discontent aimed at WN but I'm not really seeing how what happened is their fault aside from the FL employee being somewhat dispirited.

On the other hand, I could see why people would be a bit suspect regarding the circumstances in Justin026's story.

Mabye if Airtran provides upgrades to SWA employess on company business, they'll like it and convince management to keep BC.

Wishful thinking, but you gotta hope for something.
