AirTran Airways A+ Rewards - The Incredible Shrinking Carry-on Size Allowance

AirTran has always been one of the most generous when it comes to carry-on size allowances, permitting 55 linear inches in the overhead bins versus the legacies' 45 inches. But according to AirTran.com, that's changing effective March 1, 2012. AirTran customers will be limited to 50 linear inches for the primary carry-on item (the same as WN's allowance). A big "you're welcome" from our new overlords over in Dallas.

I have never seen either Airtran or WN enforce the carry-on size limits unlike many of the legacy airlines.

Me either! I did once have an AirTran FA ask if the 3 bags I was bringing on board were all mine (he didn't see the medical tag on one of them).

I like it when airlines enforce the carry on bag limits..People bring way too much stuff on the plane..My recent flights with UA/CO the agents have been very proactive in enforcing bag rules..@:-)

Probably won't happen here - definitely won't happen on WN.

That a side effect of charging for checked bags.
I was reading earlier this week that AA is basically now bribing its elites in BOS to please oh please oh please check a bag please so that AA can get their flights out on time: seems everyone is stuffing everything that they legally can into carryons so as to avoid the checked bag fees, and AA is just now discovering that tends to slow down boarding...
As long as everyone has at least one free checked bag, there tends to be ample overhead bin space (I find).
