I fly FLL to ATL frequently but never on short notice. I would like to go tomorrow for the day but the best available rate is a lot more than I would like to pay. If there are seats available, do they drop the rate same day rather then let it go unsold? Is it worthwhile to go to the airport a few hours before a flight and if there are seats try to negotiate?

Fares from FLL to a point beyond ATL are likely to be much cheaper. This is called "hidden city ticketing" but AirTran and Southwest do not prohibit it. Try FLL-RIC, FLL-RDU, FLL-LGA, etc to find a cheaper fare. All stop in ATL, so as long as you don't check bags just get off the plane and don't show up for your second leg.
Right now, there are o/w flights for $149 from FLL to ATL; not too bad for last minute.

And if you happen to be between 18 and 22 years of age, you could always fly standby for $69 by taking advantage of the AirTran U program (http://www.airtranu.com/cheap-student-tickets.aspx). Other than that, I have to agree with djs. $149 is a pretty good last-minute fare.

$149 also available out of PBI if that's an option.

that $149 was one way, I needed to come back same day which put the fare well north of $300, did not have to go so didn't, just wanted to learn a little more about last minute shopping, thanks

Only if they don't catch you.

That is what I thought. WN does allow hidden city ticketing, so that poster was half correct.
