Argentina - Critique my Argentina plans

I'm considering visiting Argentina the last week of December and first week of January. This would be my first time there. I want to spend a week in Buenos Aires and then possibly do a side trip either to Iguazu Falls, Mendoza, or Colonia. I am a little concerned though since I know the first two weeks of January is a popular vacation time for Argentinians. Will the places I mentioned be ghost towns at that time of year? I want to be able to do sightseeing, shopping, and visit some cultural sights. Would restaurants, stores, and museums be open or would it be like visiting some European countries in August? Also, what kind of weather could I expect in those places at that time of year?
It'll be business as usual apart from Xmas day especially and New Years day. Nowhere will be like a ghost town.
The weather in the capital and other places you mention will be either pleasantly hot or unpleasantly hot.

And Xmas eve and New Year's eve. It is critically important that if you are in Buenos Aires on either of these evenings, that you make advance reservations to a restaurant that will be open. Otherwise, you will either be eating room service or snacks from a 7-11 type place. Most everything will be closed.

Yes indeed.
The first two months of the year see a lot of human movement around Argentina due to the main school holidays. I personally don't like the capital during Jan/Feb anyway as it's too hot for me.

An option for Xmas and NY is one of the dinner events that the large hotels put on.... not inexpensive, but they are usually rather elaborate and have nice F&B programs.

One thing for sure is that if you want to visit Mendoza and/or Iguazu you should look in to making reservations for flights and hotels now.
January is the prime month for tourism in Patagonia, with many foreign tourists also opting for side trips to other parts of Argentina.
