Caribbean - Has anyone rented a GPS at SJU (San Juan, Puerto Rico) airport
I'm wondering if anyone has rented a GPS unit from one of the car rental companies at San Juan airport? I know I could buy one, and I might do that. I think Magellan (sold at Costco) might have directions for Puerto Rico. I just don't know how accurate one would be if I buy it at my local Costco instead of renting locally. I guess I might have the problem of a local one being in Spanish instead of English.
The majority of GPS units in Puerto Rico are US units.
I know from personal experience that Garmin and Tom Tom GPS units from the US work in Puerto Rico without problem, as does anything using Google Maps.

Do you mind sharing more about your experience? I have an old Tom Tom unit but I'm worried about how up-to-date the POI's are, how accurate the street locations are etc. I'd hate to get there and find out my Tom Tom doesn't work. I guess I could try it at home and put in all the POI's I plan to visit to see if they are listed.

We rented a full size through Hotline there 2 days ago. Got Hertz for $22 and it came with a GPS. And having been here for a couple days now would highly recommend having one as directions can be a bit tricky and roads not clearly marked.
I have two tom-tom experiences... the first one was with a unit I purchased 2 years ago. It was a little out of date, but completely usable. I sold that unit and replaced it with the iPhone app.
POI's aren't close to 100%, but the directions it gives are spot on. The only problem I've had with directions is that it routed me through a back woods ocean road in the middle of the night... kinda scary. Within San Juan, no issues.

Did you pay extra for the GPS or did it just happen to come with the car? Was it built into the car or was it a bulky add-on unit? I imagine that getting the GPS was a lucky break. I suppose not every car would come with one.
The majority of in-car units don't work in Puerto Rico. I think Land Rover GPS is one of the few.

It was included with the car but was an add on unit. However, it worked very well, both with the verbal as well as on screen directions. And, the screen was large. The Hotwire rental ended up being through Hertz. It was a Nissan, not what I would truly characterize as a full size but it was fine and served its purpose well.

Had a Hertz car with Neverlost in SJU and the Neverlost worked fine - aside from its software phonetically pronouncing Spanish street names... in English!

During my recent trip to San Juan, I rented an Avis car with a Garmin unit that came in a little bag. It was already set to English and worked great. I wish I had noted the model # but it was an older unit with a very small screen. The Garmin unit was a real lifesaver.
