I thought FTers would be interested to find out about a new book I just came across, called Checking In/Checking Out, by Christopher Schaberg and Mark Yakich.

It's full of the kinds of detailed observations about flying that are so popular here, & written with elegance. It's a quick read: Schaberg (who used to work at an airport, and who lovingly fetishizes everything about flying) wrote half the book, 'Checking In,' and then when you flip it over and turn it upside down, you get the other part, 'Checking Out,' by Yakich, a poet (who is just as eloquently obsessive as Schaberg, except he sort of hates flying, or is, at least, in the process of working out his phobias and neuroses).

It's a quick and delightful book, and, I'd say, a MUST-READ for this crowd. They have a fun website, too.

Seconding this. Lovely, charming, delightful little book that is also a pleasure just to hold.

We (the authors of the book) have also started an online collection of air travel stories called Airplane Reading (http://airplanereading.org/): http://airplanereading.org/

This is a site for everyday stories about flight that don't quite fit anywhere else: these could be gripes or accounts of unbelievable delays or cancellations, but they might also reflect curiosity, imagination, or wonder about the experience of air travel. It's easy to submit your story through the site, and Mark and I are really enjoying the wide range of contributions and perspectives. If you have an airplane or airport story that sticks in your mind, please send it our way.
