Hi all

I am seeking some help with accommodation in San Francisco from 1st Dec to 5th Dec for my family of 4 (kids 10 & 8).

Unfortunately we have a car as we are doing the big loop around California.

So I am looking for something cheap/affordable ($150pn). I cannot wait to try all the fantastic restaurants/food place in San Francisco so would rather save on the accomm. I don't mind an older/clean hotel, but some I've been looking at the review say dodgy area. We plan on walking or bus/tram most places and maybe just use the car to go out to the wineries up north one day.

I'm looking at Good Hotel, Best Western Carrington, Hotel Americania, Royal Pacific Motor Inn.

So can anyone tell me any good bargain hotels oh and also places to stay away from. Also with going out at night would we be better off staying closer in or just catching a cab out to Hayes Valley?

All your help is appreciated.

Finding a clean hotel for four people in a reasonable neighborhood not too far from the sights, including parking, for $150 will be a bit of a challenge.

One option is the Colombus Motor Inn. It's close to Fisherman's Wharf and North Beach, walking distance to Chinatown. A 2-bedroom suite is $125 - $240, depending on dates of stay. No parking charge, which is unusual.

Otherwise, you can try the hotels on Lombard Street in the Marina District. The area is safe and the prices are low relative to most areas.

Are you driving here and that's why you have a car? If you're flying in I'd seriously consider just renting a car for a day, if the parking contributes to your limit cost -wise. Or drop the car off here and rent another one for your lopop.

Good Hotel is a n older motel that's been slapped w/ some paint and new TV's. Rooms are small, walls really thin and the area w/ two kids isn;t as walkable as some others If you were a young couple only interested in nightlife I might say go for it.

There is no BW Carrington here AFAIK. Could you mean the Carriage inn? GOod, BW and Ameritania are all in the same sketchy block. Again of you were just here to sample nightlife id be more inclined but w/ two kids, you might actually want to walk around your hotel and I wouldn't . I live here, and I'm not scared of the area, but it's not pleasant and neither are these 3 hotels.

I don't know the Royal pacific but i know where it is,, location would be better.

I'd look at the Columbus Motor Inn as suggested or the BW Tuscan Inn. A bit pricier but there are rates w/ free parking for $180 or so a night.

Not sure what's in Hayes Valley for you - restaurants? I'd cab it anyway ....

Stay at Royal Pacific Motor Inn. If you have AAA you can get a discount. Rooms are no frills but are clean. You get free parking and free wifi. Ask for a room facing the parking lot and it will be quieter for your kids.

Walk across the street and get a cheeseburger at Sam's (hole in the wall). Anthony Bourdain said it's in his top 3 in the world.
