In 2011, more than 230,000 American women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. An even more stifling
fact: 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with cancer of the breast during their lifetimes. October ushers in National
Breast Cancer Awareness Month, celebrating 25 years of awareness, education and empowerment and Americans
across the country will be provided opportunities to learn about this life‐threatening disease.
During October and
November, Republic Airways is selling Ritter Sport Milk Chocolate Strawberry Crème bars for $4 each to support
this cause. Proceeds from sales of the bar will fund research at the Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center. The Tissue Bank is the only one of its kind in the world that collects healthy breast tissue for cancer study and
research. As a greater understanding of the healthy breast is essential in identifying early detection tools, the
Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center in works to acquire biomolecule and tissue specimens from the entire
range of breast development – including puberty through menopause. The Tissue Bank then makes these
specimens or the digital data derived from them accessible to researchers around the globe. The Tissue Bank
collects breast tissue samples from donors on several specific dates through the year.
For Republic Airways and Frontier Airlines, the fight against breast cancer is especially close to home. Amy
Chiappe, Republic’s Director of Inflight, initiated fund‐raising for the cause amidst her battle with the disease.
Driven to find the good that can come from challenges, Amy rallied Republic and Frontier to focus attention on a
cause that researchers feel could have incredible potential to be a breakthrough in breast cancer research.
Republic is partnering with Indy’s Super Cure – in conjunction with the 2012 Super Bowl in Indianapolis – to
support the Tissue Bank.
Recently, the Tissue Bank was given a rare gift from a Carmel, IN resident. Traci Runge donated normal breast
tissue four years ago and last year, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, came back to the Tissue Bank to
donate cancerous tissue. This rare donation could be one of the clues to a cure by understanding the difference
between normal tissue and cancerous tissue, however, the cost to test Traci’s donation is expensive. By purchasing
the Ritter Sport chocolate bar, you will be contributing funds to test those samples, as well as to support the other
life‐saving work being conducted at the bank.
“So many people around the country – including employees, friends, families and passengers of Frontier Airlines –
are impacted by breast cancer,” Amy said. “Our goal is to raise the funds necessary to ensure this invaluable find
does not languish and that it serves as a pivotal step forward for breast cancer research.”
In Addition to the candy bars RAH/F9 are selling ties and scarves on the website that will also benefit cancer research. All uniformed employees are allowed to purchase and wear the neckwear in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Our guests are welcome to purchase them as well.
