Im trying to plan out a trip to Singapore to visit my sister at the end of Nov.
I am also thinking of visiting Hong Kong afterwards.

Im looking for a AA flight (which would probably be Cathay) so I can get AA miles.
There are flights (LONG ones) from JFK to SIN (via NRT/HRD or HKG) and SIN to JFK.

But theres nothing good between Singapore and Hong Kong.

Any recommendations on cheap (but good) airlines?

On expedia, direct flight is over 1k and connecting flights are around 400.

Thanks

What dates? For a late Nov trip, I see dircts between SIN and HKG for as low as 400 on CO and as high as 625 on SQ.

My plan is to fly from JFK to SIN on Nov. 24th.
Then SIN to HKG on Nov 29.
SIN to JFK on Dec 2nd.

I am trying to get AA for the JFK-SIN / SIN-JFK, and then maybe a 1 way on the cheapest (but still good) airline for SIN-HKG

SIN-HKG flights are very competitive.

There are so many airlines doing this route, from budget to FS.

There are budget carriers (jetstar and Tiger) which even make the trip cheaper.

If you want AA miles and status benefits check out CX.

You can book a codeshare AA/CX flight JFK-HKG-SIN and SIN-HKG(stopover)-JFK

I was originally looking to do (3 one ways/multi stop)
JFK-SIN (via HKG)
SIN-HKG
HKG-JFK

But the flights (I did this on AA.com) for SIN-HKG were horrible.
Like 1 to 2 days of travel for it.

When you say:
>SIN-HKG(stopover)-JFK

The stopover can only be a day, or else its a 1 way ticket.
I want to stay 3 days.

Thanks

i'd say book a multidestination ticket from JFK to SIN then return HKG to JFK and just a one way with tiger airways or jetstar from SIN to HKG.

Perhaps I was misunderstood, on the return SIN-HKG-JFK stop in HKG as a multi-city trip. (Maybe you can't do it as an AA redemption)

Yeah, thats what I think I have to do (hence the thread to find a cheap 1 way from SIN to HKG )

cuz on expedia they were like $400, and adding that to my AA ticket its looking like 2k!!!

It's too bad UA doesn't run the 747s on this route anymore... I bought a roundtrip HKG-SIN in August for only HK$1607 ai (G fare), perfect for a weekend trip to SIN. I'll miss the cheap runs for SG food and shopping at Orchard.

Best I'm seeing right now is HK$2533 (~US$325) ai on HX (I only tried Nov 29-Dec 1). I used to wait until last minute to book these flights but there's probably not much point since CO's 737 should fill up quick and CX/SQ fares will not fall lower than HX.

What has this thread to do with Singapore?
It should be in AA or better still the Other Asian, Australian and South Pacific Frequent Flyer Forum.

originally the plan was to do a roundtrip from SIN to HKG. Now we are thinking of doing it from HKG-SIN.
So the thread title is slightly off, apologies.

So far I have these options for a roundtrip from HKG-SIN

Jetstar - about $2,000 HKD
Tiger Airways - about $1800 HKD
Continental (from expedia) - $240 USD

Cathay and other flights on expedia were all MUCH more expensive.

Am I missing any other budget airlines?
Any other recommendations?

Thank you

We are thinking something like 11/25-11/30.

Jetstar vs Tiger Air...is one better than the other, or are they both decent?

Thanks

CO is available for less than US$240/HK$1850 ai (K fare, it only drops to G a few days before departure ime). That's a pretty good deal, only problem is that the CO flight arrives even later and leaves even earlier from SIN than the previous UA flights which had terrible times. Hopefully it's the same crews running this route, because the UA HKG FAs are not only the best in UA, they're some of the best in the world imo.

HX is still available for HK$2228/US$287 ai, they're a decent full-service airline and you get a couple more options for flight times than CO.

If you're really inclined to pick between the LCCs, 3K (Jetstar Asia) would be a far better choice than TR (Tiger Airways) imo. At least there is the possibility of earning QF miles by paying a bit more and most importantly, they don't operate out of the budget terminal at SIN. If you've ever been to the budget terminal or seen pictures of it, you know you want to avoid that experience. It's an entirely different animal to the rest of SIN. Plus TR's been in the news for all the wrong reasons lately. Both 3K and TR operate out of T2 at HKG which isn't nearly as nice as T1, but it's not bad.

Considering the 3K flights would cost as much as the HX flights all-in, I would either go with HX if schedule mattered and if it didn't I would go with CO. At least on CO you'll be assured of normal carry-on bags allowance, a free checked bag and earn some miles. The food is terrible in Y though, mind you!

1. CO
2. HX
3. 3K
4. TR

Check directly with the carrier website, when flying Asian carriers inter-asia, often the best rates are NOT through expedia or the other western booking websites, but through their own homepages. Also, you have to find their sale links before being able to see the cheapest fares.

SIN - HKG is one overpriced and expensive route. If you have a little time, fly ex-KUL instead. You can hop over to KUL on Jetstar (don't do Tiger as you need to change terminals at KUL), and then fly CX to HKG. The whole thing should cost marginally more than what you would pay on an LCC ex-SIN.

So HX (hong kong airlines) is a full service airline.
This means that they are better in terms of checked bags.

I've been doing some reading on here about Jetstar and their strictness with check bag weights has me concerned.
If I went with Jetstar, I would purchase in advance 25kg just to be safe.

But since HX is a full service airline, I get to check my bag for free, so that is an advantage.

Right now, the prices is about:
Jetstar - 2,100 total
Hong Kong airlines - 2,600 total

for some reason the tax was a lot more for HX.

500 HKD difference, which is quite a lot actually...

anymore info on Hong Kong air vs Jetstar?

Thanks

Only other difference I can think of which hasn't been mentioned is HX flies widebody (A330) on this route while 3K flies narrowbody (A320).

Disappointed with myself.

I was 90% leaning towards Hong Kong air.

But I sat on my butt and didnt book.

So I went to book last night and the price of each ticket went up from 2,500 HKD to 3100 HKD!!

Originally it was 500 HKD more than jetstar and I was willing to pay that.
But paying 1,000 HKD more, is a lot!

So we bought tickets on jetstar instead.
I bought 25kg worth of check in weight.
I hope that will be enough. Never had to think about this stuff before (I usually fly domestic AA or Delta)

The standard of airline travel is so high in Asia that even LCCs like JQ/3K are better than the typical domestic AA or DL flight in Y. The only thing to watch is the bag allowance, otherwise if you're used to flying domestic in the US you'll survive anywhere in Asia except for the Russian Far East. :D

Agree with one of the other commenters - on Expedia/Kayak/Orbitz, Cathay and Singapore were both quoted as over $1000 USD for HKG-SIN when I was looking at flights for early Nov.

However, when I went directly to the CX or SQ sites, they ended up being around $350-$450 depending on whether you wanted to accumulate miles.

I imagine even more savings if you went through ethnic travel agents, but I ended up pulling the trigger for SQ online.
