Just got this email from B&H Photo, one day only sale, not the student or upgrade edition.
Adobe Lightroom 3, 50% off (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/AD125794/Ntt/AD125794/N/0), only $149. Sale ends 10/4.

Apparently I missed it (must have ended 10/3). Now showing $300.
I have an old version of Photoshop that I'd love to replace, but Adobe's pricing on the current version makes me choke. No way can I justify the pricing.
Oh well.

snagged this at that price. First time with LR and love it, especially the ability to print directly and do easy email conversions.
For those that missed the sale, google around and you'll still find deals. LR is a good year or more from LR 4, so you won't be obsolete right after purchase.

If you're just looking to process raw images, try the open source cross platform RawTherapee (http://rawtherapee.com/). I think the default UI is a little harsh on the eyes (although you can change the theme). There might be a bit of a learning curve due to the large number of options (and no "wizards" to speak of), but it does have plenty of power for manipulating light, shadows, color, recovery, etc. The only area where I think it falls a little short is noise reduction. However, use you can always try out something like Noiseware (http://www.imagenomic.com/nwsa.aspx) on the results if you're not satisfied with them. According to the RawTherapee changelog it looks like they've got some new NR processing that may be in the next release so I'm excited.

Thanks,
I actually use UFRAW plug in for Gimp which is acceptable... does levels, some noise reduction via wavelet filtering, color balance etc etc..
Shooting raw and using this I can get away being a few exposure levels off...

How old is the version? I think I saw that if you miss a couple of upgrades you have to pay the full price again.

That's the problem. I still have Version 7. Adobe wants full price, and it's simply not worth that much to me. A reasonably priced upgrade I might do.

The thing is at that price point why just buy PS when Amazon has Production Premium for $840 which is only $200 more than Full version Photoshop but include Illustrator and Premiere.
