I tired booking on the website. Recent design changes are neat, but fare information, and rules have been shredded. Website suggests calling local ticket office for fare information.

yes you're right! i think they are also experiencing problems with the web site these days, i can't see the log in windows on the main page neither.
Sometimes different countries websites work differently try alitalia.com/it or what ever is not yours.
