New England - Best New Haven pizza

Heading up to HVN on Sunday and wanted to try some of the local places. Betwen Pepe's,Sally's and Modern which one would people suggest?

Pepes and Sally's are just a couple minutes from each other if I remember right, so you could try both the same night if the lines are not too long.

You can't go wrong with any of the three.

Pepe's is now a franchise with branches in Fairfield and one of the casinos. Theirs is a super thin crust and is sometimes burnt. Sally's has a chewier crust. Of the three you mention, I prefer Modern for the trifecta (1) quality ingredients (2) preparation and a real brick oven, and (3) excellent service (Sally's and Pepe's servers often give customers major attitude).

Don't discount Bar, which makes an absolutely fantastic pizza and I believe is right up there with the best of New Haven (and I thought I heard somewhere they actually have one of the chefs from Modern) and brews several very good beers onsite.

Modern & Bar are my favorites.

Went to modern and they were closed till late on Sunday so we went to Pepe's instead. Really enjoyed Pepe's but will try modern next time. We also went to Fishtails in Madison which had a great lobster roll.

Glad you enjoyed some quintessential CT dining. Thanks for the report. FYI Lenny and Joe's has a full service restaurant, with a liquor license, in nearby Clinton.

For seafood, I can't recommend Lenny's Indian Head Inn in Branford enough.

Indeed, good call. And during busy hours, you don't have to wait a week for a table. :rolleyes:

I currently live in New Haven, and my fave is Modern, but the others are great too. My biggest gripe is with the wait times... and with the fact that everyone here in the Elm City thinks they invented pizza. Get over yourselves people! :D

One thing about New Haven is that many of the dumpy looking strip mall pizza places have incredible Italian food. Can beat waiting at Sally's for an hour.

I found Sallly's to be amazing and Pepe's to be way over-rated. I still need to try out Modern but I would also highly recommend Zuppardi's!

If you live in New Haven, consider Dayton Street Apizza in Westville. It is primarily carry-out, but has a few tables to eat in (no liquor license). The pizza definitely rivals the big three in quality.
