Central America - Costa Rican Rental Car

We're trying to rent an SUV. We'll be there for 5 weeks, 10/29/11-12/02/11. Every place I see is like $950+ due to the mandatory $500 insurance.

Any suggestions on a cheaper rental?

I feel like renting you MY car, car theft or simply someone vandalizing your car is common, unfortunately my suggestion is to pay those ridiculous fees if you want peace of mind

do NOT leave your passports or valuables in plain sight under any circunstances, just a suggestion and I hope you enjoy your visit :)
