India - Luxury hotel rates in India

I booked hotels for an upcoming business trip to India in December when the hotel rates are ridiculously high (USD $300+/night, despite booking months in advance). Staying at Taj and Oberoi brand properties. When I told my friend in India about the nightly rates, he said these were *double* what he could book on his own as a resident Indian.
Is it true that rates differ whether you are an Indian resident vs. foreigner? Anyone else with this experience?
Thx.

Not really. Rates at the Taj and Oberoi (especially in Delhi / Bombay type places) do go to INR 12K++ a night. You might want to try other hotels, and book using for example cleartrip.com to see if you can get better deals.

sometimes there is a difference but it is never anywhere close to double....often 5-10% if any....december is peak season in india & hotel rates are quite high, doesn't matter if you are a foreigner or an indian....
