Las Vegas - Car parking at casinos

Is this all valet parking or can you do it yourself?
Also, is there a time limit as to how long you leave a car there when you're not a guest? Considering renting a car for next to nothing and leaving my case in the boot / trunk rather than pay loads for a hotel room for the night that I'll probably never use whilst I'm on The Strip.

There is free self parking in addition to valet at virtually every strip casino. There is absolutely no issue with your proposed plan.
Some downtown properties offer free self park with validation (and some like Main Street Station have free self park).

Most have valet and there is no fee involved. Maybe a tip of 1 or 2 dollars.

Every casino/hotel I've been to on the strip has free valet and also free self-parking. I've stayed as long as about 8-10 days at a casino without actually driving my car anywhere, and I doubt they have any way to know which car is yours anyway. Any longer than that, and I would plan on coming back and moving to a new garage (or at least a new parking space).
If your destination is "anywhere on the strip" I would recommend Harrah's self-parking garage. Harrah's has excellent self-parking (not all properties do) that is easy to navigate. Harrah's is right in the middle of the strip, and they have their own monorail (http://www.harrahslasvegas.com/casinos/harrahs-las-vegas/casino-misc/las-vegas-monorail-detail.html) station that is easy to get to from the garage. The valet there is also fine, if you prefer that.
On the flip side, if you are definitely planning on partying all night, you might consider Planet Hollywood instead. But their self-park is a pain, use the valet.
Many people visiting Vegas either don't have cars or, as you plan to do, park them and then just walk or utilize busses or taxis. Traffic can be bad, especially on the Strip. Only disadvantage to self-parking I've encountered, and not at every hotel, is possibly having to walk a long distance from the lot (and even then you may be at a rear door, some distance from the registration desk or main casino). But, as I said, this isn't always the case. In the case of the MGM Grand, the walk was long enough that we opted to utilize valet parking (and gave a small tip each time; thre was no set fee). On another visit, when we stayed at the Golden Nugget downtown, the self-parking lot was close to the hotel that we used it and walked. When we decided to take a look at the Sahara (since closed), valet parking was right in front of the casino but self parking was some distance away, and the lot was quite full (this was right after Xmas) so it took a while to find a space.

be careful if you plan to sleep in the car since security might trespass you if they catch you.
Rent a room in the Imperial Palace or harrahs or ballys, they are dead cheap and center strip ;-)

every strip hotel has free parking.
every downtown hotel (that i know of) has paid parking with validation, but it is usually only a few hours.
no hotel in vegas charges for valet, but the valets can get full and only allow hotel guests unless you are willing to tip fairly big ('what would it take to leave my car with you guys?')
i wouldn't recommend leaving anything in the car itself, most likely it would be ok, but take your bag to the bellmen and leave it with them.
if they give any guff about having to stay there, tell them you are waiting for a friend to check in or a party of people or something. have a tip out (visible) when you drop the bag off.
i definitely would not sleep in the car, vegas has been hit hard by the economy (which is another reason not to leave anything in the car) and cheap rooms can be had at nice places.
there is no real time limit to leave a car parked at a casino, but if that is all you are going to do i might recommend just taking a taxi from the airport.
it's a great city, there is no where else like it. it can be anything you want it to be, have a great time.

All strip casinos have free self parking. Some of the downtown ones I'm not sure on.

Here (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/108/las-vegas-lifestyle/how-long-can-i-park-large-vegas-casino-1065824/) is a thread on the same topic from a poker forum, including the fact that at one casino you can literally be dead in your parked car and not be found for 12 days.

Well, this is a sticky subject, and honestly it all depends on which casino you are going to.
Let me break it down:
Vegas Valet is FREE!!!!!
Cosmopolitan, ALWAYS Valet park. Who doesn't want to drive through an array of diamonds.
MGM - most of the time you are better off parking and walking through the shops. The valet is very slow here!
Imperial Palace - Valet
Wynn/Encore - Valet
You get the idea. It has a lot to do with the location of the garage, if the valet is a hassle or not, and also outside temperatures.
The money you tip isn't a lot anyway, so as long as you ARE tipping something, I'd say valet whenever you want.
