Driving to NYC from Chicago. Leaving on QM2. Any ideas for parking. Terminal parking is $24 p/day - $264 + for the 10 day cruise. Any cheaper option? Cab in from a nearby lot in Brooklyn?

I had luck at NJ terminal with EWR hotel offering park and fly/cruise packages for $179 in 2009. clacko Sep 27, 11, 2:16 pm whats the cost of the cruise air & xfer to/from the ship?....or do you need your car for other than home-ship-home? MtlFire Sep 29, 11, 5:55 am Thats about the going rate for parking in and around NYC. I've just paid it the two times I've cruised out of NY. Park & Cruise rates might exist at some hotels across the river in New Jersey but then you are adding on the hotel plus transportation to the port. Not sure you come out that much ahead (unless you were coming in the night before anyways). The Hilton at Penn Station in Newark offers easy transportation, but still charges 21$ a night for parking. I don't remember if they had park and cruise rates when I was there last week. tentseller Sep 29, 11, 7:50 am Thats about the going rate for parking in and around NYC. Cab in from a nearby lot in Brooklyn? Anything around the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal would most likely cost the same. Cheaper options do exist, but would require additional travel via cab rides, so the additional cost has to be considered. One option that I've know of people doing is using AirportParkingInc.com to book a parking reservation at a hotel nearby LGA or JFK. Apparently, they've set up agreements with hotels so that those who need to drive to the airport can park in their hotel parking lot for a fee and take their free shuttle to the airport. These fees are typically much lower than the "standard" airport parking fee. A co-worker of mine who lives in Upstate NY needed to get to JFK for a 10-day vacation and paid $10/day (plus a small service fee). She was telling me just the other day that her friend decided to go directly to the hotel manager recently and got an even better deal. Also, call the hotels around the area. There's a Marriott and Sheraton in Brooklyn that have parking lots. Maybe it's cheaper. Be sure to mention that you won't be staying at the hotels when your car is there. YMMV. It is a trek to go from the hotel to the cruise terminal (although I imagine the hotel will help you get a cab), but do some research to see if the savings is worth it (remember to add in cab fare!). If I were traveling with a family and need to drag a 3 year-old along, I may just park at the terminal. But if I were with my buddies, we might set out for an adventure. cordelli Oct 25, 11, 6:13 pm Drop the family and luggage off Park at an off site lot if you choose one Cab it back to the ship. No hassle with the family or the luggage. Assuming you find anyplace worth parking at I would guess the garages in the area to cost more than the pier. Dropping them off for them to check into the ship is one thing. Having them wait at the terminal after returning is another thing. Add rain and NYC traffic and you may have a minor disaster on your hands. :p cordelli Oct 26, 11, 1:32 pm Figure it takes five minutes to walk the few blocks to the parking lot, two minutes to get the car and five minutes to get back to the ship to pick them up. It's really not that much different than waiting for any other type of transportation from the cruise terminal. They don't have to wait outside if it's raining, you can call them when you pull up and they can come outside when you get there. Parking prices shouldn't differ much a few blocks away. In my previous post, I was referring to using a hotel near the airport (JFK or LGA) as a parking lot to get a "real" discount. |
