Hi there, I thought when leaving Washington DC from Dulles I would visit the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. However, it seems that I cannot go there with my luggage as following items are forbidden: tripods, monopods, guns, knives,
pen knives, pets, food/drinks, scissors, aerosol cans, tools, smoking and I will be carrying scissors, pet knife, aerosol can (deo spray) and some food (biscuits, chocolate bars). Is there any chance I could leave my luggage somewhere at the center or at the Dulles Airport? Any luggage storage facility? Thank you for your advice.

Is it luggage to be checked? Airlines usually accept bags 4 hrs pre flight, otherwise the rental car or a nearby hotel are possibilities.

At Dulles, other than checking your bags very early with the airline, there are no storage facilities at the airport.

However, there are lockers at Udvar-Hazy. I know that I've stowed a medium-sized, soft-sided carry-on bag there; I doubt that a big suitcase would fit.

There are two sizes of lockers at Udvar-Hazy:
17"x17"x17"
17"x17"x35"
Lockers require a quarter to use, and return the coin
to you when you open the locker.
Hope this helps.

Now, if I can push things a bit further... I arrive 12:25am Monday night/Tuesday morning. Any recommendation for a hotel that's convenient to both the airport and museum? I don't have to be at my destination (National Harbor Westin) until 5pm or so on Tuesday.
Thanks!

One of the best deals around... just a quarter. Large enough for your rollaboard and enough room left on top to add your laptop case.
Some up-to-date info on the lay of the land- The shuttle from the museum to IAD is $.50 (somewhere I'd read that it was free, not that $.50 isn't darned near close to free). The 5A bus to downtown DC is one of the best deals going, at just $6. Drops you off at L'Enfant Metro station. The observation tower, which I didn't have time to visit but is supposed to be cool, closes at 4:30pm. And Tuesdays, I'm told, is the best day to visit in terms of very few visitors and an excess of volunteers.

I stayed at the Hilton on our visit to the Udvar-Hazy, and the hotel shuttle provided transportation to and from the museum. ^ (Even if arriving or departing the same day, the bell desk can check and keep your luggage - but we did stay overnight on both sides of our visit to enjoy the entire day there.)
The main thread for the National Air and Space Museum Stephen F. Udvar-Hazy Center is this one (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/washington-d-c-including-baltimore/868494-national-air-space-museum-s-f-udvar-hazy-center-iad-dulles.html). Lots of links, transport information, etc.

Or are you talking about just leaving it there while you visit the museum?

He means check it behind the hotel desk, for retrieval at a later time.

Hi, I wanted ot check if this is still an option, and that it wasn't closed for any security reasons. I would like to store my carry on and possibly my backpack, while I move around the museum. Also would anyone be able to point to where the lockers are on the map, I don't see them listed.

The lockers were open a few weeks ago when I last went. There are security guards when you enter to inspect everyone's bags; they will direct you to the lockers, which are by the front door.

If I'm going to put my carryon in a locker, will they have restrictions on what is in the bag. I would have just landed from California for a week trip, so I will have shaving gel and shaving razor in the bag.

I've been there with a carryon/toiletries before, without any problem. Plenty of people visit the museum on airport layovers.
Also, as long as you're in the line for the elevator to the observation tower at 4:30PM, you'll get in -- and hopefully in time for the AF A380 take off at ~4:40.

I know this is outdated, but there is a Marriott on site of IAD and there is a Washington Dulles Westin that can take you to the museum.
