I'm a Gold VIP member and wondering about the Munich City Hilton. Is there an executive/towers/concierge level? Have other VIPs been offered breakfast privileges of any kind there? Is it, in general, a nice place?
Any shared experiences would surely be welcomed!

Thanks. I also found a few other replies on this same subject before posting.
I guess the heart of my question is the availability/access to an executive floor or concierge-level lounge, etc., and breakfast benefts for Gold VIPs. Thanks.

1K SFO,
the Munich City property does not have an executive floor and there is not much to the hotel other than being above the S-bahn stop. i much prefer the Munich Park property as the executive floor and lounge has been renovated within the last year and the staff is excellent. In addition, they have a cigar bar and gave me a comp coupon for a drink when I checked in on the exec floor. i would definitely recommend this one!

Just wanted to make a quick trip report, with thanks to all of you who wrote in with information.
My family stayed at the Munich City Hilton, which I'm pleased to report is VERY NICE. It doesn't stand out in my mind as particularly special--the way the Hilton Amsterdam, with its rooftop Executive Floor, is--but there's absolutely nothing objectionable about it. Indeed, the front desk was extremely helpful, the rooms have great work spaces and Internet connections, and the staff was extremely proficient in helping me get my dial-in strings right and the plugs set to allow me to dial in. The buffet breakfast--free to VIPs--is great.
And, cannot stress enough how awesome it is being above an S-Bahn stop (Rosenheimer Platz)-- easy airport transfers and getting about each day.
Never did see the Munich Park Hilton, so no means to compare.
Also, take note: my parents had room 2020, a HUGE suite (three times the size of my king room)-- worth requesting!!!

I would recommend the Munich City Hilton. We stayed there in mid-November and we liked these things:
1. Free upgrade to a Junior Suite. It was quite large with a nice living area, bar, two big closets, robes and a spiffy bathroom with those cool soap tubes they use at German Hiltons. Hors d’oeuvres arrived at the door about 5 p.m. and bottled water was also complimentary.
2. Free breakfast. We were there on a Saturday night and enjoyed an amazing Sunday Brunch spread with sparkling wine, omelette bar, beer and those tasty Weiswurst and pretzels. Who needs an Exucutive Lounge when you've got a real brunch to chow on?
3. Location over the S-Bahn. This means a non-stop ride from/to the airport. Very nice.
I've heard good things about the Park Hilton in Munich but have absolutely no complaints about the City Hilton.
BTW, the rate was excellent, only about $90 USD. Definitely a keeper.

I searched here and not one word about the Hilton Munich City. We are staying there the end of November. Is there a reason it has not been mentioned here. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I stay there quite often.
The best thing about this hotel is its location with a direct entry to the main S-Bahn routes. Direct line to the airport. Close to downtown (five minutes via S-Bahn or 15 Minutes walk).
The rooms are ok. As a Hilton Gold you usually get a junior suite. Gives you a bit more room.
The hotel is next to the Gasteig. A lot of very good (classical) concerts in there.
Plenty of good restaurants and pubs around.

ernie,
Munich City is a nice hotel: friendly staff, the rooms are in good shape, and it has a good location. The only drawback is that there's no executive lounge.
I've stayed there twice since May. The first time I was upgraded to the business floor with a nice corner room. The second time was during Oktoberfest of this year so the hotel was sold out, hence no upgrade. Didn't matter because I had a suite booked anyway.

If you do not need the subway, try to rebook to the Park Hilton in Munich. The location is nicer (just at the border of the large "English garden") and the rooms are better and recently refurbished.

My wife and I stayed there laste year for New Year's. Very nice hotel thatough as others have said, not as nice as the Hilton Munich Park. Service was excellent. Rooms were nicer than any Hilton I have stayed in in the states.
Best part though is the subway station below the hotel. S8 train takes you from the airport directly to the hotel (25-35 minutes I think). Also, within a few train stops of all the sights in the city. Quick walk to museums, theater, concerts, etc.

Just finished a week there. OK hotel, nothing special, no special recognition of Gold Status.
Standard room on executive level,(That I paid for)No Upgrade, NO ISDN!
Next time, I'll try the other Hilton in Munich.

I have a German collegue who always stays at the Hotel Opera on St. Anna Strasse. Not affiliated with any chains. About US $140 per night. Close to the Marienplatz and Maximillianstrasse. Not to be confused with the Hotel Oper.

Staying there next month... probably. Anyone have any good information on this property,a nd it's proximity to the major sights of Munich?
Yes... I see the earlier reviews by a search. Just looking for any new info. Thanks!

- Bar was just days before completion of remodeling when I stayed there a month ago
- Nice is S-Bahn (subway like regional trains connecting many stops in the inner city with the outskirts right under the hotel (Rosenheimer Platz, direct elevator to Hotel, follow signs)
- Very centrally located
- No executive floor or lounge, just business floor
- Fairly nice rooms
The Hilton Munich Park is not quite as good in regards to it's location but a much nicer hotel with extremely large executive room floors and beautiful view. Plus a nice cigar lounge. I'd go there and pay 10 euro's extra for the taxi.

We stayed in both. City is more convenient to trolly line and some events. Somewhat noisy, being on very busy major street.
Park is a different upscale hotel in a a very quite park setting.

Which S-Bahn line do you take from the airport to the Munich City Hotel? I think it may be the S-1, but am not sure. Or is it quicker to take the S-8 to Ostbahnhof and change to to S-1 or S-4 to Rosenheimer Platz?
edit: I found quite a bit of detail in the LH forum re: spending time in Munich. It looks like the S-8 goes from the airport to the Muncih City Hotel, and is the train/line to take. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum32/HTML/001855.html

I could be wrong (so check previous posts) but I am pretty sure the S-8 takes you directly from the airport to the basement of the Munich City Hilton. The stairs take you into the lobby of the hotel next to the cafe. The trip took about 45 minutes.

I was looking to book the Hilton Munich City as a reward in Feb., and it's classified as a Classic hotel (30,000 points per night).
On the new scheme starting in June, it's a Category 2 hotel (20,000 points per night).
That's one heck of a downgrade, and it makes me wonder if it's worth the 110,000 points for a 4-night stay in Feb, when the same stay in June would be 80,000.
Anyone have any experience with this hotel? Do you think customer service would issue me the 4-night certificate for only 80,000?

i liked it myself:as gold, i got 2 drink vouchers for the bar, and full breakfast in the morning in the cafe, and it was very good. I found it convenient to take the train from FRA and so easy to make an early start as the elevator takes you right to train station. I am thrilled about its downgrade!! as a star RTW fanatic, munich is a convenient hub for me..now all i need is a pointstretcher as well...

Thanks for all the feedback. I changed my plans and needed a 6-night stay instead of the 4, which made it good for a GLON award. I booked a GLON award at the Hilton Munich Park. After reading all the reviews on FT on City vs. Park, I was still waffling between the two when I called (you know how you never get a straight answer after reading FT reviews http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ). When they only had smoking availability at City, and Park could confirm non-smoking, that pretty much firmed up my choice for the Park.
If anyone has any info on how to use transit to/from the airport to the Park, I would appreciate it. Also, if someone knows how to get to the downtown from the Park, I would appreciate that info, too -- we'll be a couple of American tourists primarily sightseeing. Is it worth doing the bus/bahn combo, or is it a cheap taxi ride or something?

channa, I've never stayed at the park but German public transportation is fantastic, some of the best in Europe from my experience. The U/S bahn trains will take you just about anywhere you need to go in Munich. Their rail system is great as well if a bit on the expensive side compared with other european countries. Very rarely should you need to take a taxi anywhere since the u/s bahn stations are everywhere. The only time I use a taxi is if I'm carrying a ton of luggage or am with a travel partner that doesnt want to deal with the trains/luggage. Good luck, Munich is a great town.

With regards to timing, the most convenient transportation option at the Park Hilton is the taxi. However, one can manage to use public transportation as well, it's just not as convenient.

O.K.I've read the pro's and cons from past posts about this property and am doing a points stay, 2 rooms for 10 nights in June. Since I will be doing day tours to surrounding areas, I will only be using the room for sleeping. I am nor particularly concerned about upgrades, etc, just comfort. I have read that there is Subway construction being done on weekends, and this is scheduled for completion "midyear". Does anyone have a more firm date as to when this construction will be complete?

Officially they want do return to the normal schedule on 3rd of April 2004. So you have a safety cushion of about 2 months and you schould be fine.

I've been there for two weekends over the past two months.
The subway construction is just rebuilding of the lines (modernizing an already very modern system). I was subject to absolutely NO noise; you will probably never hear anything. I sure didn't. I think they are replacing rails (I am not sure of the details, but understand that the Munich system was built in time for the 1972 Olympics; the REAL construction happened back then).
The only inconvenience was that they run busses on the inner city subway routes. This isn't a really big deal, and it is a lot more scenic. However, since a lot of that route runs under a pedestrian zone, the bus routes are VERY indirect, and take longer than the normal subway hops.
The bus stops directly in front of the hotel, on both sides of the street. Coupled with the subway stop (Rosenheimer Platz) directly below the hotel, ALL hotels should be so fortunate to have such easy and comprehensive transit so easily available.

This is my first trip back to Munich since 1978. I spent each summer from 1956 to 1971 with my brothers and mother at my grandparents when I was growing up. My father would join us later for 2 weeks using his vacation time. Now I'm taking my wife and KIDS?(21&24)-and son in law back to show them the places I used to frequent. I wasn't really worried about the noise factor as much as wondering what the transit system would be like once I arrived there. Thanks for the information and clarification.

Funny, I also spent the better part of the summer of 1978 in Munich. I just returned this year, for the first time since then.
For the most part, little has changed; the subway system is still very modern (although it looks its age now), but it's still really REALLY clean and efficient. The system is still an "honor system"; I did get asked once for the ticket though, so I would totally recommend riding "legally". (they call the ticketless riders "Schwarzfahrers").
The trains are sparkling....new. No graffiti (in the stations or trains), but some is now visible in other parts of the city.
Also, the subway announcements are now in German and English!!!!
In any case, the construction won't present a hassle or challenge, just the slight inconvenience of the bus...

*i think the answer is no; when i stayed there last year i was given a drink voucher for the downstairs bar and a breakky voucher..the breakky was excellent, full american breakky...room was pretty small and that is the hilton with the electronic thingy in the fridge which records a purchase if you even move the cans of coke out to put something in the fridge. I like that place just the same..its well located and easy to get to, and i like a good breakky

I would contact the hotel to verify, but I'm nearly positive the answer is now yes.
The Hilton Munich City underwent an extensive renovation and an executive lounge is a major part of that. They weren't due to open the lounge until the spring, but I was told last week that the lounge is now open, ahead of schedule.
--Grog--
P.S. I agree that the Munich Park is also a terrific stay. The lounge and its personnel are top notch. They seemed to have quite a few apprentices (Auszubildende) who all showed great professionalism -- very impressive staff. Had the pleasure of a stay there two weeks ago.

Munich City Hilton is great. I am there now. I have spent around 40 nights here this year...and the staff all greet me personally. I'm sure you wouldn't get that in many US Hiltons - and don't get me started on the UK (non-London) ones.
Just make sure you aren't on the 4th floor, which is not renovated. All other rooms are EXACTLY the same - regular, delux and executive. Delux gives you better toileteries, and a guarantee of no 4th floor - executive gives you a rubber duck(!). All other furnishings are exactly the same. 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th floor are very recently renovated, and are really comfortable with excellent desks, beds etc.
You will only get access to the (superb) lounge if you are on the exec floor, either upgraded or paid. This is new from one month ago, and the lounge is much less crowded. Golds and Diamonds do not get automatic access.
As a Gold, they MAY upgrade you one level (regular to delux, delux to executuve) - but often not, as Diamonds get priority in upgrades. Since becoming a diamond I have always been upgraded, and received execellent treatment, even on 99 Euro rates.
As a gold you will get water and fruit, and coupons for a full, hot breakfast (worth around 27 Euro/person!). Brekkie is excellent, both in lounge and restaurant.
Main gripe is HSI (internet). This is via Swisscom. You used to be able to use it for 30 minutes, 2 hours etc. The only option now is 24 hours for 27 Euro. This will change on 1st December, and then the only options will be 1 week for 108 Euro, or from 11 am to 2pm the next day for 27 Euro. This means that access for one day from 9am to 4pm will be a staggering 54 Euro.
Any other questions, let me know!

There is a full program of events planned - I have the brochure they produced in my hand! Various Advent brunches, Christmas meals etc. They suggest to order the Advent brunches 2 days in advance, on + 49 89 4804 2303, and Chrismas/New Year meals on + 49 89 4804 1204
The only email address here is info.munich@hilton.com
You'll love Christmas in Munich - I do and I'm an Orthodox Jew! Don't miss the various Christmas markets, Tollwood festival and the other celebrations. And take your winter woollies - it should (with luck) be snowy by then.

Don't know what you read and what you are aiming at, so it is difficult to give you a helping hand. In general: Since late 2006 no dramatic changes. They have the ambition to treat DIA well what not always work, either if the hotel is fully booked or full of DIA...

They have a *single* computer in the lounge and sometimes you have to wait a bit to use it. Also, I found no stray open WiFi signals anywhere near the hotel.
