So I reach late at night and pick up my car. I don't have any bags to check so instead of picking up from the terminal I was supposed to [apparently there are two pick up places in Tampa airport for hertz] I go to the first one off the tram. The attendant there is gracious and quickly gives me a 'nice' car. Its an Ultima Coupe which is fire red and indeed looks very nice. I get in and drive off.
Next day when I am admiring the car in the hot Florida sunlight I see a long thin white scratch on the roof of the car! It looks old but is definitely noticeable and now panicking I check the car on all sides and there are definitely small chips and scratches all along the car. Not visible in the dark but stand out in the light. Please bear in mind that I did not do anything to the car, just went straight to the hotel, parked in an empty parking lot and went to sleep.
When I return the car, I steel myself to futilely dispute that I had put these scars on the face of this beautiful car. But the attendant prints out my receipt and waves me on.
Lesson learned, no matter how elite my status is with Hertz [5*GOLD with 15 rentals to date as a leisure traveler], I will always check the car from now on.
Summation: check the car carefully before driving off with it.
