I am planning to buy a Swiss watch in Hong Kong (Breguet or other brand). What can I expect price wise compared to buy it in Germany? Maybe regular list price, but saving the German VAT? Thank you for the info from the experts.

HK is no longer the land of cheap Swiss watches because of all the mainlanders coming over to buy watches. IIRC, HK is has been the #1 market for Swiss watches (and beating the US) for several years now. You'll also get the same treatment in Singapore but I found the folks in Thailand (BKK) to still be quite aggressive with discounts.

The US is also pretty good (and there are ways to "avoid" paying taxes) and I always found Japan to also have good prices - at least when their yen was at lower levels.

I suggest visiting the TimeZone forums and looking at one of the Authorized Dealer (AD) sponsors. They can usually offer a good discount, you get peace of mind you're getting a genuine product, and as mentioned earlier, there are legitimate ways of avoiding paying sales tax in the US.

Unfortunately Braindrain is correct, since the Mainland Chinese are buying these by the dozen, it is very difficult to get really good prices. You can try but you should know how much the same model costs in Europe and then compare before you buy.

The idea that HK is a bargain shopping destination is no longer correct. Indeed, it is quite expensive.

For example, bought a pair of Crocs shoes in HK last month. 400 HK$ or over $50 US. Same shoes in US $30 or less (plus sales tax of around 6%).

For watches you will do much better on 47th St in NYC--or try a variety of US online sites.

For most products now the EU is much cheaper than HK.

Name brand and luxury stuff are not cheap in Hong Kong, but the HKD is still linked to the USD. With the USD so weak this year, the prices may still be competitive with Europe, though not the US.

Um, I think not. I've found things in the UK 50% cheaper than compared to what I would pay in Hong Kong and that INCLUDES the 20% VAT that is charged in the UK.

With HKG pricing of luxury goods where they are now, CBP/CBSA are not concerned anymore with returning US/Cdn PR going over their duty free limit and not declaring purchases.
However the beagles are still around looking for agricultural and food item.
