Rome's hotel tax, effective 1/1/11, was reported in this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/italy/1169526-new-rome-city-tax-tourists-jan-1-2011-a.html).
With Italy's government spending cuts, other cities are seeking additional revenue form visitors and tourists, adding per-night hotel taxes (tassa di soggiorno) ranging from $1.40 to $7.00 per person per night.
At least eight municipalities in Italy have imposed this tax - Alperobello, Capri, Florence, Giardini Naxos (Sicily), Padua, Sorrento Coast and Venice.
Not huge amounts, but that's what they are counting on - the amount will not cause most to avoid travel, but it all adds up on a family of four traveling in Italy for ten days. And we can bet there are more cities line dup to pile on this tassa di soggiorno.
