Are they ceding PDX to Alaska?

At least PDX-OGG; Hawaiian took the plane for San Jose and Oakland. Presumably they are not filling the planes with fares they want. Alaska has put a dent in them. It's too bad because its 250 some odd seats to Alaska 150 or whatever. That's a loss of a significant number of seats on a daily basis.

I've been loyal to Hawaiian, have their credit card, etc. Hawaiian didn't even announce the change I had to find it myself a few weeks ago and I asked about it and no one in reservations had a clue. They do fancy press releases for new flights, but not a single mention of pdx being dropped.

Hawaiian can kiss my rear. I've been loyal, they try to pass one by.

Come over to Alaska! We offer daily nonstop service from PDX to OGG & HNL. We offer frequency to KOA November through March.

Get our Credit Card and get the $99 Companion Airfare certificate and 25,000 miles upon approval. Take a Flight Attendant's application and get another 1,000 miles.

We look forward to welcoming you aboard one of our flights at Alaska Airlines.

Aloha!

I have taken the flight. It's just not as comfortable on the narrow body plane. But what will happen with the fewer number of seats for the market is that fares will rise. Competition is good for consumers.

With HA bailing on the route... wonder if AS will add frequency? Doubt they have the A/C for winter 2011/12 but should have some deliveries in 2012 to help out. Then again it is a quick hop to SEA for even more flights. Perhaps OGG ex-SEA will bump to 3x daily then?

I know someone with a flight coming from OGG to PDX late Jan (originally booked non-stop), and they didn't get any type of notification or announcement, not even an email telling them of the change in that their would be a connection in HNL and non-stop service would be discontinued. The only reason they even realized it was that they happened to check on their flight recently online to make sure things were alright, and their itinerary coming back to PDX was radically altered. A bunch of BS and customer support basically said... nothing we can do. Not the best way to keep customers that is for sure.

They should be able to cancel those flights penalty free for a refund if they booked the discontinued non-stop flights and don't like the connections. That's their recourse.

Hawaiian has been largely unsupportive of customers inquiring as to the planned change. What will happen is that Hawaiian will end up destroying the goodwill they built up over the years here in Portland.

But I am not sure you can legally argue for a refund. Don't the rules require that if they get you there within X amount of time of your original time then they've met the contract of carriage. I am not sure of the rules. But then again, customer service might dictate another policy.

Having flown both HA and AS on HNL-PDX and HNL-SEA, I'd take AS hands down any day of the week and twice on Sunday. The service I got from the FAs on AS in both Y and F was some of the best I have ever received... seemed like AS was picking their top flight attendants for their Hawaii routes.

HA seemed like a cattle call. Tons of people given the larger plane, our gate was out in the ewa concourse next to almost nothing, FAs indifferent, and both planes had MX issues. I am fine flying HA for interisland flights but AS has earned my business from the mainland.

Just be prepared to pay more. No way that the elimination of 254 daily seats will not affect the bottom line price.....

I cancelled two trips today with no problems. Tickets were in F and were non-refundable. CS agent said they would do this as a "courtesy".

Apparently, discussed in the Alaska Forum, Alaska is adding a second RT PDX-OGG sometime next calendar year 4 days a week. This is good news now that Hawaiian is bailing on PDX. A darn shame really for Hawaiian to abandon the PDX-OGG market after being the key option for over a decade on non-stops.

Has Alaska really beaten Hawaiian back on it's own key routes over this past year? I'd say this is a big wow. It took awhile, but Hawaiian blinked first. Too bad, Hawaiian is a decent airline.

A 767 not used on a mainland route can be used to open up a new international route. Would not be shocked to see a new international destination announced starting in Jan of '12.

The plane is purportedly going to service for Bay area service to Maui, which was already announced. You won't see additional international flights because of this flight cancellation.

Flew HA PDX-OGG in March and was surprised at how relatively little the difference between Economy and First was, and, at boarding, how light the flight load seemed to be for an early March flight. Now I know why.

As for as Alaska - used to love that airline and had tons of FF miles and status, then Alaska decided to pull the plug on my small airport, leaving us stuck with United Express/Skywest and their ear-killing Embraers. No Alaska for me anymore.

Well, at least AS hasn't filed bankruptcy in recent years. There was a valid business reason (more than emotional attachment) that AS discontinued service to LMT. Certainly, as a passenger, I don't want my money subsidizing money-losing operations!
