Any FT experience with the "New" Plaza?

Reviews are trickling in around the web, and they aren't exactly glowing.

Of 9 ratings on TripAdvisor (all from the remodel) 4 are terrible, 3 are poor.

A sample of some of the better comments:

"The plaza looks good but it still has a sewer like smell to it."

"Talk about lipstick on a pig! The new stuff is ok (still not Strip quality) but too much of the old Plaza was left in place."

The smell alone would keep me away. I remember that smell all to well, and it's been about 10 years.

I did a quick walk through the casino at the end of August and was not impressed. Many parts were unfinished but I did not notice a bad smell. However, I did not go to any of the rooms. The hotel lobby was attractive but the casino looks like old, downtown with new paint.

I don't really see what market their remodel is aimed at but I'm not it.

My brother was there this weekend for the NFL. He liked the renovated sportsbook, but said they didn't update their slots or VP. Having the old, beat up machines didn't improve the experience at all.

Last time I was there on a comp, there were bed bugs. To be fair, it was a few years ago.

The rooms were renovated and fitted out with new furnishings, decent quality stuff which they bought for pennies on the dollar from the failed Fountainbleu project. I've heard that the physical transformation is pretty dramatic (to the good), but that service is suspect. Once Oscar Goodman opens his restaurant, I may give it a try one night.

I though the Plaza was moved to Hill Valley, California and renamed "Biff's" :D

November rates are now under $20. Tempting even to double book a cheaper room on the strip. I can leave the more expensive room behind if the Plaza works out.

Reviews for many budget Vegas properties, like Imperial Palace (http://www.tripadvisor.com/WidgetEmbed-cdspropertydetail?locationId=186114&lang=en_US&partnerId=A164FB5B21EB427C81576F48B0A8945C&isTA=true&format=html&display=true) form a little bar graph bell curve. Sometimes there is a spike of complainers who rate a property Terrible, but I often discount that as sore losers from the casino.

Consistently good properties, like the Orleans (http://www.tripadvisor.com/WidgetEmbed-cdspropertydetail?locationId=91907&lang=en_US&partnerId=A164FB5B21EB427C81576F48B0A8945C&isTA=true&format=html&display=true), have a sloping bar graph moving down from Excellent.

So the upward sloping bar graph for the Plaza is really depressing, as it slopes up to the consensus of Terrible. It is rare to see such consistently poor reviews as The Plaza (http://www.tripadvisor.com/WidgetEmbed-cdspropertydetail?locationId=97815&lang=en_US&partnerId=A164FB5B21EB427C81576F48B0A8945C&isTA=true&format=html&display=true) as the Plaza is now garnering. And a lot of them sound as if, like me, they really wanted to Plaza to be all nice, clean, and updated.

Instead, it really looks like they've cut corners, and the plumbing may just be beyond repair:

I'm glad to see it is even-ing out (click link above). Trip in November, may try it (he says, nervously --- look at the YouTube video -- shudder).

I'm taking the plunge on Sunday.

But I also have backup plans.

Also, gonna try the $20 front desk tip. Although at the P maybe $10 would do. ;-)

I think the suites are nice; at least this one is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWVrXbzdlUg

That guy cracks me up. "What a package!" LMAO
