My wife and I are planning a weekend getaway to Charlottesville, VA, to see Monticello and other area sites. Does anyone have any information about the Doubletree or the two Hampton Inns that are in Charlottesville? It looks like the Hampton Inn by the Univ. of VA might offer the most walking sites but I'm also curious about ease of getting to Monticello (SE of Charlottesville).

I have stayed at the HI on India Rd. Very nice hotel, maybe 2-3 yrs. old, close to shopping, and many nice restaurants w/in 1-2 miles. Cont. breakfast the usual coffee, juice, pastries but I remember warm cookies at night!
If you'll go to HamptonInn.com, find the hotels in questions, then on the left hand side of the screen under local guide, you can click for directions, restaurants, attractions and get turn by turn directions to Monticello.
I hope you enjoy your trip, Monticello and it's grounds are filled with wonderful history! Also, within 25 miles you can visit:
Ash Lawn-Highland, 10 mi. SE
Blue Ridge Parkway, 22 mi. W
Historic Dwtn Charlottesvile, 0 mi.
Michie Tavern, 6 mi. SE
Monticello, 8 mi. SE
Montpelier, 25 mi. NE
Have not stayed at the DT I seem to remember its further than HI on India Rd. and has a restaurant in the hotel. Am not familiar with HI/University.

Our family stayed at the Doubletree last summer. I think we paid something like $85 for our room. I thought the hotel was above average. They had an indoor/outdoor pool and a tennis court (they had rackets and balls that they would loan you). Being a HH Gold, they put us on the Executive Level, which was handy for breakfast and snacks. As I recall, the hotel is north of downtown and perhaps a 10 minute drive to the historic downtown and UVA. Monticello is further south (perhaps another 10 minutes or so. Quite a few chain restaurants and shopping malls along this major road. Overall, we liked it and would stay there again.

FYI - Don't go to Charlottesville for the shopping though.

The Doubletree is a ways from the University - 10 min or so. I don't think either of the HIs are within walking distance either, but both would be closer than the Doubletree.
