Hi!

I'm looking to book travel in C for 2012 and the prices are very reasonable, Asiana being about $400 less. It looks like Asiana would be C in the A330 and Korean would be Prestige Plus on the 747 to ICN.

On the way back ICN-SFO looks like both carriers are operating at 777.

Any advice on which hard & soft product would be better for these long haul routes? Have only flown UA internationally (in the new C) so starting to branch out.

Thanks!

If you are a "UA 1P aiming for 1K!" as your handle suggests, then you should fly Asiana to get the miles.

If this is not a concern, I would go with Korean Air if you can get their Prestige Sleeper seat, which goes full flat. If you fancy good food & wine vs. seat comfort, I'd go with Asiana.

Sorry about that - my status is a bit outdated. I no longer have status with UA but am collecting Hawaiian Miles.

Looking at the flight details for the Korean flight it looks like it's not the full flat bed sleeper seat but just the regular Prestige Plus. I believe the C seats on A330 on Asiana doesn't go flat either?

If the hard products are both full flat, I would choose Asiana everytime for a much superior service.
The only time I would pick KE over OZ is if KE offered full flat bed vs OZ slanted bed.

It looks like the A333 will be the 167 degree seat on OZ. The 777 from ICN - SFO is the Quadra Smartium so it will be full flat.

I think KE business class will be the prestige plus seats which I don't believe are full flat.

OZ new C is superior to even the new KE C found on A380.
SFO-ICN is operated with new C product (at least one of the two daily flights).
I'd choose OZ over KE on this route.

OZ operates only one daily flight to SFO. The only intercontinental route that OZ operates more than a daily flight is LAX which is pathetic.

If you are collecting Hawaiian miles, you should fly SFO-HNL-ICN with HA. You will be able to collect at least extra thousand miles with this routing. Otherwise, you can earn Hawaiian miles by flying KE thanks to their partnership. I am not sure if you can earn Hawaiian elite qualifying miles by flying KE though.

What about if you had the chance to fly ICN-LAX-SFO with the first leg in C on the new KE A380 vs ICN-SFO in C on the Quadra?

OZ in C! Better seat, better service, non-stop ^

My personal preference for seat comfort:

1 OZ Quadra Smartium
2 KE Prestige Sleeper
3 KE Prestige Plus
4 OZ Slant flat seat

Service, I prefer OZ over KE by a wide margin. I still can't get over the tiny wine glass used by KE. Outbound and inbound, I was never offered refill and had to ask. Inbound the FA that I asked forgot so I had to ask another FA. Although after meal service, FA who forgot my wine refill came to apologize. Small sample size for KE, but OZ has been better for me.
