US Airways 2011 Grand Slam Promotion - General GS Discussions -- Post all "minor league" topics here!

Grand Slammers,

PLEASE POST ALL "MINOR LEAGUE" or RANDOM TOPICS HERE!!!!!

I like that FlyerTalk gave us our own "sub-forum" but whereas last year was one extreme (one gigantic thread with hundreds of pages), this year is heading in the other direction (hundreds of small threads.)

I think there's a need for a thread that is available to consolidate all the random, little topics that don't fall under the "Major League" themes of Car Rentals, Hotel Stays, Hotel Transfers, etc. I miss going to one thread and reading all the random thoughts people come up with in a day.

So... I decided to try to start a desire path** and make such a thread. I guess if enough people agree, this thread will live on... if not, oh well. I tried.

So, PLEASE POST ALL "MINOR LEAGUE" TOPICS HERE!!!!! And feel free to shame others to do the same :D

(**Desire Path is the term for those dirt trails that spontaneously pop up when people collectively decide to take the shortest route and not follow the established concrete path)

...and I'll start it off with a random comment:

GRAND SLAM... please just START ALREADY!!! Will ya???

I've got my 500+ e-miles ready to go.
I've got my $25+ e-Rewards currency.
I've got an overpowering desire for some Biscoff cookies (I hope they ship to Iraq).
I have three deserving folks to whom I REALLY want to ship flowers.
I have an empty pen just waiting for a new cartridge and I wanna plant a tree somewhere for $2.
I'm stranded at the DFW terminal and desperately need a SuperShuttle to the Hyatt about 400 feet away.

C'mon, Grand Slam... GET ON WITH IT ALREADY!!!

I sure am! Gonna make it a poetry grand slam, y'all!

I can't begin to tell you how much I enjoyed the show "Incorruptable" last year at the Duke Energy Theatre.

(No... seriously... it's not possible for me to begin....)

Why not? Might as well travel in style for such a show! You should book a second high award ticket so you can block out the seat next to you.

How late can one buy a ticket for the poetry slam? I don't want to deprive someone from going but that is becoming an increasingly attractive hit.

Alumino
Sep 13, 11, 1:56 pm
Are you "attending" the Charlotte Poetry Slam or any other ticketed event in the Durham or Charlotte area???

And by "attending" I mean not attending? Want to donate your ticket to a good cause?

I just contacted the USO in North Carolina and they expressed an interest in receiving donations of tickets to events in NC. They said that they already have a process in place to handle the distribution of sport/concert/event tickets to local Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines.

Now your ticket doesn't have to go to waste!

I'm not quite sure how to best handle the logistics -- I just thought this up about 30 minutes ago, and just got the reply from the USO. I'm willing to help coordinate this process, I just have to figure out the best way. If you have any thoughts, please let me know here or by PM. I'll probably set up an e-mail account for folks to send the e-tickets to.

Anyway, just figured I'd pass that along! Stay tuned!

Anyone know if buying a cruise and then being "unable" to show up for it would get a hit? I was just playing around on the website and saw a three day one way cruise from Vancouver to LA they are advertising for $99. Of course, these are based on double occupancy and there are probably a boatload of taxes added in (pun intended), so I'm sure nothing would cost out very nicely. Still, I thought it might be worth discussing.

I would like to propose a solution to the dilema of all the threads being created for "minor league" issues or questions.
1. When someone creates a new thread of this nature, one of us posts a reply in which we say that the Mods have asked that this type of thread not get started. We then take the question and post it to this thread on behalf of the poster who might not really understand. We include in this message direction to the thread where the question has been re-posted.
2. We answer the question on this thread and try to be nice about it.
3. No one else replies to the question on the original thread. It therefore falls to the bottom of the sub forum and can be ignored. This part is really key!! The more "don't post here" replies something gets the more it keeps these things alive!

The audience rewards will definitely work if you buy the ticket and no-show???

I'm in Boston, and not for that long unfortunately, so there's no way I'm going to be able to do that unless they add some shows outside of NYC. I feel bad for the poetry slammers....

PLEASE POST ALL "MINOR LEAGUE" or RANDOM TOPICS HERE!!!!!

OK, here is a random topic.

How many actual miles did people walk away with last year? I realize that 36 hits will get you 100,000 miles. But considering sign on bonuses, transfers, credit card bonuses etc, how many miles above 100,000k did people earn?

I liked the idea of donating tickets and followed up and called the USO. Email tickets can be mailed to blevine@uso-nc.org

Thanks for contacting them -- I contacted them too and they sounded excited to put any and all donated tickets to good use.

I also contacted the folks at "CarolinaTix" and asked what the best procedure would be for "Will Call" tickets (e.g. like for the SlamCharlotte Poetry Slam)

This is what I was told the procedure should probably be:
--You buy the ticket
--You get a purchase confirmation (with confirmation #) by e-mail
--You send this confirmation number and message to the USO
--The USO then matches this donated ticket to a specific person
--The USO provides the name of this person to CarolinaTix
--CarolinaTix will make the ticket available for pickup by THAT person

(I assume E-Tickets would follow a similar procedure as Will Call Tickets)

Sounds like this will all go quite smoothly! I was waiting to hear back if they had a preferred e-mail at the USO, but that was already taken care of by Nangress. ^ So if you wish to donate your SlamCharlotte tickets (or any others) to the North Carolina USO, please send them to blevine@uso-nc.org. If I hear back from NC-USO that they want them sent elsewhere, I'll update this message.

They post every two weeks starting 9/28. So when you get 4 hits, you'll get 3000 miles at the next posting date. Then 7000 more on the posting date following your 8th hit.

Alumino

So, I'm a lightweight and my goal here is 8 hits for 10k miles.

I too was once like kilton... way back in aught ten. But then you start looking at the increments....

1st Bonus = 3000 miles
2nd Bonus = 7000 miles
3rd Bonus = 5000 miles
4th Bonus = 10000 miles
5th Bonus = 10000 miles
6th Bonus = 10000 miles
7th Bonus = 15000 miles
8th Bonus = 20000 miles
9th Bonus = 20000 miles

"Hmmm... another 8 hits will get me to 25k miles"
then
"4 more after that gets me another 10k"

And at that point, it was time to buy flowers, cookies, trees, stickers for my phone, pocket wine guides, pen cartidges, etc.

So, don't give up hope. With the help of FlyerTalk, you'll be surprised at how far you can get for practically free. And for $100 you can get much farther.

If you are using the toolbar for a search and that search is Amazon and the toolbar tells you that you get 1 mile per $1 spent and you immediately go on and buy from Amazon - does that count as a shopping mall hit? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

hi there. i'm new to this and just wondering about something that might be obvious to others. when booking rental cars, flights, hotels, etc., does one only receive hits when using a us airways credit card to purchase these things?

dukerau
Sep 15, 11, 12:35 pm
I have the SAME question!

No. Every two weeks (starting 9/28), you'll get miles posted if you've reached a new tier. That's the only way to tell if you've received hits. That said, most hits are 'sure' things - if you have miles posted from a 1800Flowers, OfficeMax, etc purchase, you got the hit. If a transfer from eMiles, eRewards, or hotel program shows, you got the hit. For those that may be questionable, you can do 3 sure hits and 1 questionble one and wait til 9/28 and see if you get the first bonus tier posted. Obviously you can manipulate this strategy to check moving forward.

Quick question for fellow GrandSlammers...

Thinking about using the getAbstract offer for a hit... However, when I go to check out, it says I will get 3000 points for the 6-month subscription where the original page says 4000 points. Does anyone else see this?

Also - My Amex registration on Points.com seems to be broken, and while they fix it (ticket already submitted), does anyone know what the minimum swap is from Amex Points to DM Miles?

Thanks!

It seems like we're flashmobbing some of the cheaper/easier hits. A restaurant is mystified by a bunch of orders to be delivered to a shelter. Skymall ran out of 9v batteries, and 800-Flowers ran out of the NASCAR bear.

$26 for 3 years all-in OR $26 per year for 3 years?

Per year. So $76+.

Cheapest option remains email for two years. I used that last year - don't need a domain name, you just make the purchase and let it languish on their system without pairing with a valid domain (meaning you can't use the email account). Of course I actually need a new domain name this year. Trouble is I can't bring myself to pay anywhere near what Network Solutions wants a .com domain. Absurd.

Strangely, it seems .com domains have gone up. I can still buy .net and .org for $5-$7 a year but .com is $10+ - why? Less availability, sure, but that just means fewer good domain names available.

I doubt his email says USxxxxxxx - mine doesn't. And my alphanumeric DM # worked just fine, oddly enough. Of course I always type it with capitals and the few times I've ever encountered issues, I've resolved them by adding four leading zeros.

I can't doubt that his e-mail says what tommy says that his e-mail says! After all the whole forum is based in good faith between members!! :)

I can only think that maybe i did something wrong! I will wait for a month or so and if the miles do not post, i will try to fight it with NS and US (got a screen-shot of the check-out final step)!!

Well, he did say he added the US prefix so just trying to figure out what his email "specifically" said. It seemed to take my DM if I padded it with enough zeros (just testing, I didn't complete the transaction). I'm sure the confirmation email would naively spit back the same number I entered but that doesn't guarantee it would be credited properly to my account.

I got the confirmation at the check out page (before payment) that my DM Account will be credited with 2,000 miles in 8-10 weeks. But the email confirmation I received simply stated the amount I was charged and the duration the domain has been registered for, nothing about the US DM credit. I'll follow up with them if I don't receive miles/hit within the stated timeframe.

The email confirmation I received had my real DM account number. I just didn't want to post the real number here, so I substituted "xxxxxxx" for my number.

However, it's obvious that posters here are still reporting varying results.

Did exactly as you suggested, no such confirmation for me in the email, only on the checkout page which stated my dividend mile # that will be credited with 2K DMs, I took a screenshot of that so will follow up with Network Solutions/US Airways if I don't get the miles/hit.

At half price, I would pop on it... but not at full price.

Register a new domain name, decline extra services like privacy and hosting, select 3 year registration, enter code SAVE70DAF in the shopping cart, and the price changes to $26.09 ($8.69/yr).
As I note in the Other Partners thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/17147773-post568.html), if you move the slider from 3 years to 1 year, the price drops to $17.50, allegedly still earning 2000 miles. Anyone else seeing that?

UPDATE: 1-year subs will not earn miles. See followup post below.

When I am logged on through the US Toolbar and went to NetSol, there was a brief flash message indicating that you will earn 11 miles for every dollar spent, so if you don't care for the extra bonus miles then even .org reg for $11.99 should work and and post 121 ($11X11 miles) miles?

I thought the miles would be coming from DM Mall and not the Vendor. If its from DM then no Hit from NetSo , if its from NetSo then a Hit from NetSo but not DM, so that would mean the only way to get a DM Hit would be if you order something from a Vendor that doesnt earn miles going via DM

guess time will tell, I had a couple of hotel stays that earned besides teh 250 for the stay 2 Miles per $1, but theres a CD I want that is coming out early Nov so I when a $10 GC arrives I will order it via DM Mall to cover myself

WineInsiders: I have a case on its way to me. What's the over/under on the total number of bottles (out of 12) that are actually decent wines?

Maybe four?

At seven bucks a bottle, I'm guessing there are going to be at least a few bottles that are getting sipped once and then going right into a big ol' pitcher of sangria.

Also: is there any way to get e-rewards without dealing with the asinine process of clicking on a survey to be told, 100% of the time, that you're ineligible to take it? e-miles is fine: little 10 mile surveys for everyone. I'll be at 500 miles with them in a week or so. But e-rewards is annoying to the extreme. Can people transfer e-rewards to each other? Can I just buy a stupid stuffed animal or something and get e-rewards?

In response to how many bottles of wine will be good... I received my case of wine yesterday (went with the all white sampler) and just thought that I'd give you a heads up that there are 4 bottles of each of the 3 brands of wine. You're getting 3 different brands of wine, not 6 or 10 or anything. But, if you ordered the white & red sampler, you'll get 6 brands.

I was expecting to have 2 bottles each of 6 different brands... unfortunately, that is not the case. haha

Funny story.... two years ago when I bought the wine for GS09 I tried some and it was so bad that I just poured the bottle out. I used the remaining bottles to bring as house gifts and office party gifts. About 3 months after I gave away the first bottle it was presented back to me by the same person I had given it to as a party gift. Of course I didn't say anything, but it went immediately back into my regifting stock.

With first-round tier bonuses coming soon (9/28), I think it's worth making a list of the still-unanswered questions that might, through inference, be resolved tomorrow. Here's a stab at listing the lingering issues about what will or won't count as a hit:

Direct-posted miles from Audience Rewards trivia. I suspect this won't be treated as a hit, but we have no track record from prior years to go on.
Non-wine-club purchases (accessories, one-off wine sales) from Vinesse. This was a hit in past years, although not without a struggle.
Magazine for Miles. The fact that this activity has started posting with the generic description "online redemption" is a little unnerving, but I predict US will manage to get this one right. Eventually.
LaQuinta points transfers. The rules/T&C are inconsistent here, but my money is on this counting.

What else belongs on this list?

I asked him if he knew why the web page wouldn't take my account number with the 3 leading zeros, but he wasn't sure although he did say he could get a message to the frequent flyer promo department to insure they credited the correct US Airways account. I guess all I can do it wait now...

I have two other questions (so far).

One) I know that you report in the "other Partner" thread that people have reported that the other merchants in the 1800flowers website count (fanny may, for example), but do we know that they trigger a hit as opposed to just generating miles?

Two) The $2.00 plant a tree donation in the shopping mall that now says it does not count raises a couple of questions. Will people who ordered prior to the language change receive a hit? Do we have the data to figure out the cut-off date (or did I miss this somewhere)? Unfortunately, it is the only screen-shot that I somehow missed, so I'd love details so I can at least make an argument.

I thought I saw someone report that a Fanny May purchase showed up as a "1 800 Flowers" activity credit in his/her US account. If that's true, US would have no way to know it wasn't a flower purchase, and it should result in a hit, IMO.

Before you dispute this with your CC issuer, try getting NetSol to void the purchase.

I made the mistake of signing up for a 1-year domain registration, relying on their ultra-crappy website, which doesn't issue a "no-miles" warning about this unless you manually refresh the page. (That's right: they dynamically update pricing when you change the time period, but conveniently "forget" to dynamically update the terms/restrictions.) FYI, I called to check afterward when my confirmation email made no mention of miles; when they said I wouldn't get miles, I asked to cancel the transaction. They promised to do so, and the credit has been issued to my CC.

I do most of my points hobby research on my iPad. I've been leery of using it for purchases from partners because I'm just not confident that the iPad has cookies and tracking quite the same as a full computer. I know in most cases we are prompted for our DM # but I guess I am still cautious. With upcoming travel plans I will only have my ipad with me and would like to keep working on the GS.

Any FT-ers out there who can confirm having completed partner activity on the iPad and having that activity post?
Thanks!

Edit: I just did the Audience Reward trivia from start to finish on the iPad so I'll see if that works, too.

I have bought from merchants in shopping mall and had the points post fine.
I had not been using ipad for grand slam as i have been taking screen shots, and had not known if i could do that with my ipad, which i have not owned long. Anyway, i found instructions yesterday for taking screen shots with ipad, so that can be donevto document. Whether tracking works better on pcs or laptops than ipads i cannot say.

I have an interesting question. I purchase a couple of things for the gs from different partners, that I figured that I may have a use for. I bought the stuff on amex and chase sapphire. Now, my wife thinks some of the stuff needs to get out of the house and she calls it all "crap"! (i understand her...). So, I was wondering, if i return it to Amex and chase via the "90 days return protection" (they both have it), and I get refunded by them (its after 30 days since I ordered some stuff), would that have any chances of getting back to the partners and me loosing my US miles and hits (besides of course the few points with MR or UR)? It doesnt make sence to me that amex or chase would "report" it to them as returned or it to them, but I definetly dont want to mess up my hits..

I got the exact same email, from the exact same person. They are now "looking into it." I have a screenshot as well..just in case.

Thanks but the 1st item on the Left side of the linked page is 'Domain Name' 3 yrs @ $28.99 a year. No where even by the * does it say no codes allowed and you must pay the Full $28.99 a year in order to get teh Miles.

If they give the Miles then Definitely Im Disputing the charge with my CC , since I have a screen shot of NSs page that states after you click Submitt below NS will credit your USAirways acct# xxxxxxxxxxxx for 2000 Miles. But Id rather have them credit me the Miles and thusly a Hit

Last December I made a purchase from JCPenney through the Aadvantage shopping mall. I returned it after deciding it was too big for the intended recipient and bought something else in the store. Aadvantage took away the miles awarded from the shopping mall a couple weeks after they posted in a separate transaction.

I don't know the details of your transaction, but Dividend Miles could later reverse the miles awarded and your hit. It's up to you whether you are willing to take that chance. If the Grand Slam hit was worth it to you, I would just quietly take the unwanted items to Good Will.

I signed up for the 2-year e-mail account (not the 3-year domain, but the 2-year e-mail apparently IS one of the hit-earning transactions, both according to the US Airways website and the NetSol website), but I am having tons of trouble activating the e-mail account (though it is already paid for and everything). Does anyone know if this is required? (Seems like most people went for the domain registration.) I will obviously call them tomorrow, but it is hard for me to place personal calls during the business day. Thanks in advance.

Of course, I realize I probably won't get this hit, seeing as how I signed up for this yesterday, but I figured it is worth asking if I actually need to activate the e-mail address that I paid for. Thanks!

Why wouldn't you get the hit? It goes by activity date and not posting date.

The faulty belief was based upon an obvious lack of time spent reading all the info that has been accumulated here.

dsquared, whose faulty belief are you referring to? I could not tell from your post. If you are referring to mine, I am under the impression that NetSol transactions are posting in the 2nd month following the transaction (so, December for October transactions).

Netsol does post in the second month following the transaction but the activity date will still be the date that you sign up thus counting as a hit.

The posting date is irrelevant so long as it appears in your account on or before March 14 (?) 2012. The only thing that counts is the activity date which needs to be Nov 14 2011 or before.

Okay, but the FAQ for the Grand Slam (shopping.usairways.com/en-US/FAQs/grandslamfaqs.html) says that the "eligible activity date" is when the partner records the transaction date.

I guess I'm confused then. Why is everyone worried about whether stuff will be posted by the partners by Nov 14th if that doesn't actually matter?

Certainty -- so people can do an extra hit or two if needed, if there's a question mark when the window is closing.

Not trying to be dense, but if you know your activity occurred before the Nov 14th date, and it wasn't a credit card transaction or something more ambiguous (I'm referring to the billing cycle that the FAQ) addresses, I still don't get why it matters. I guess you're saying even if you *know* you placed the order, the company might not credit it properly, and apply a later transaction date (as in the case of Office Max)? So having the miles post before Nov 14 assures you for certain of how many hits you have?

I just want to be sure I can do things (like go out of town on Veterans Day weekend - that's Nov 11-13) and still get credit. Based on how many people seem to be worried about posting, combined with what I think is some ambiguity on US Airways' part, I just am not quite sure what to think.

I just received an email stating that NetSol WOULD NOT refund.

I never expected NS to issue a Refund

No one thought that answering the trivia questions would count with AR, I got lucky that my show was CXed so a refund was issued after calling up. My pt is I doubt that I would have gotten a refund if I purchased a tkt and then wanted to CX it.

With other vendors such as Vinese we also thought we needed to buy the wine. Thusly until NS actually is suppose to post, I wont be taking any action. Once its reported NS has posted and mine didnt Id give it another day or so B4 calling NS if turned down, then I will dispute it with my CC

Its always a good thing to bag at least 1 addtional Hit as a safety net. It would be a shame to do 36 hits and end up with 35

To repeat what I posted some time back: I did get a refund from NetSol, although that was for a domain registration that I canceled within 24 hours of the transaction. It wouldn't surprise me at all, though, if they refused to refund for purchases made weeks earlier.

your refund was a very isolated case that I wouldnt rely on. it was done within 24 hrs and didnt you purcahse the 3 yr deal to replace that? did you 1st purchase teh 3 yrs or get the refund for the 1 yr?

most who purchased the 3 yr deal wont be purchasing anything else (I wont be) and it will be weeks since having purchased the 3 yr deal, I will be requesting only the Miles promised of cause if denied I will ask for a refund which I expect them to decline one. Then I will Dispute the charge with my CC and hope they will issue a refund, could be they wont either

Refund was for the 1-year deal. (Purchased because I relied on their b0rken website, which told me I'd get miles for it; cxl'd because when I played around a bit, it seemed I would not get miles, which the phone CSRs confirmed.)

No, I did not then do the 3-year deal. It's arguably worth it if you get 2,000 miles, but between the grave uncertainty about that (vs. only 1000 miles) and the question about whether using the 70%-off coupon bars any miles, I decided to stick with more reliable hits like car rentals.

OK but still a different case from those of us who went for the 3 yr deal where not only did it say 2000 miles but also mentioned it later on as well. heck as long as they give me 1 mile Id be happy since it would count as a Hit, but wouldnt mind getting the other 1999 as well

Oh I didn't either. I just told them that to sound tough..lol..anyhoo...

They then sent me the cliche email of "miles will post in 6-8 weeks."

I looked through last years thread and here are some of the posting dates:

9/22/2010 11/01/10 NETWORK SOLUTIONS BONUS 1,000
9/30/2010 11/01/10 NETWORK SOLUTIONS BONUS 1,000

So it seems as if you made a purchase at Network Solutions in September, it posted on November 1st; October purchases will be posted on December 1st etc. etc.
Some used the coupon and did indeed have miles posted. But some other people had issues with using the coupon and getting miles:

"I just talked to customer service at Network Solutions, and after checking with supervisors, they confirmed that using coupons will disqualify you from getting miles, regardless of what your email receipt says. It's one or the other, coupon or miles. So prepare for a battle..." (from 2010 Grand Slam)

So I would say, if the miles don't post for me on Nov 1st, I will do another quick hit and chalk NetSol up to a foul ball.

Well..... Network Solutions post on the first Monday of every month, so I wouldn't expect any miles until November 7th. And please note that nobody has claimed that they didn't receive the miles last year. I strongly believe that anyone active on FT would let us know.

Does anyone know of a situation last year where someone ultimately didn't get miles when using the coupon (not just rumor or from somebody talking to someone at Netsol over the phone etc...)? Wouldn't you think if that was really a bug in the system last year, it would have been fixed by this time?

Such "bug" only gets fixed when enough people complain, or the system is changed due to other reasons. Surely nobody would complain about receiving miles.

Oh yes, you are right about posting...my bad. I found this post for the Grand Slam 2010:

"My Network Solution has posted as well, 3 year domain name for 2000 miles ($20.xx with coupon code mentioned in this thread). But I don't need this hit now."
