I'm GR flying from MLA to JFK... I kept on refreshing the page at both legs at T-48 mark and immediately attempted to check in once it appeared on both legs.

MLA to HKG - I was quick and just kept on pressing next w/o thinking so I got BN1.

HKG to JFK - didn't forsee that I have to enter my passport details, emergency contact number and address in NYC..got error messages twice..so wasted 2 mins reentering the details so I got BN3.

I'm not sure about my chances are for an op upgrade since this is a wide open flight..and I'm not lucky in this sort of thing...

I'm sure it is close to nil.. so I'm not expecting anything.. but just hoping..

I also purposely booked a sit where the baby bassinet is for a slim chance I get bumped off and upgraded if a mother with an infant needs my seat.. it's a wide open fight so even the business section is still wide open..

Oh dear, oh dear. How very sad.

You get what you paid for. Don't expect, or even (as a Green) hope for, anything more.

And remember that the chances of you actually being able to spend the miles which you have earned are pretty slim as well.

Don't worry about it, because as a GR you are pretty low on the upgrade list, unfortunately. HKG-JFK is a elite heavy route, so I don't believe you can get an upgrade.

BN number is only helpful on tie-breaking, as GR you're not going to get many op-up chances, unless the stars are align right or you're traveling with a DM/GO

I know, but I'm turning silver after this round trip.

So that at least increase my chances on my upcoming regional travels to several ports in Japan involving 2 legs that not as elite heavy as JFK route..

Even as GR, many got lucky in the past as I have read several GR members got upgraded in the HKG to JFK in this forum..one even got upgraded 2X within a year in the JFK route as GR..so it really depends on luck.

But one thing going against everyone this time is this flight is wide open.. lots of vacants seats during my seat selection... so guess even MPC gold members might not get upgraded on this flight

I think you need a reality check here. MPC Green members almost never get upgraded. MPC Silver very occasionally get upgraded. MPC Gold sometimes get upgraded. MPC Diamond get upgraded quite often, but by no means all the time.

Please take time to read the forum before posting... maybe it is you who need a reality check...

There several cases of GR members who got upgraded just in this thread, there is even one person who got upgraded 2X as a GR in the elite heavy HKG to JFK route:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cathay-pacific-asia-miles/1249048-op-up-green-but-not-silver.html

you actually don't need to read it all to get a reality check.. the thread title says it all.

Believe me I took time searching and reading this forum before posting...

i still fight for BN1 just for the heck of it, but LHR/JFK opup as a GR? you've gotta be kidding me.
just go to AMS/YYZ instead and your chances will change big time.

eitherway it's not sth to write home about.

I've been op-up as a GR before from LAX-HKG. As a SL/GO I've never been op-uped on the same route. I guess just dumb luck.

However, I think it's safe to say that having any expectation of being op-uped a as GR is crazy. If you get it, then you're very lucky and it's a nice bonus. However any kind of expectation is 99% of the time going to end in disappointment.

As a GO my upgrade rate is pretty low these days. I can't imagine a GR winning the lottery here.

The reason you hear about GR's getting op-up is probably because in the few rare cases that it happens, they get excited about it and tell everyone they know, including others they don't via FT.

Ahhh , LAX-HKG/HKG-LAX is the only route I take with CX other than regional with Dragon, I've never been op-up'd , just waiting for that lucky day, But the people at LAX are really nice, one time she tagged my baggage as first class, guess she was just being super nice.

Or she just doesn't know what she's doing. I was at LAX with my MPC SL friend at LAX last week. The check-in agent has absolutely no idea what she's doing. Every time she encountered a problem/question, she went back to ask the supervisor, these are just simple questions like what to do when SL brought 3 bags instead of 2 (no extra baggage on US route for SL), whether student ticket get an extra piece of luggage (yes he does and there's a note in the booking too and the supervisor came to show her the note), overweight bags charges, upselling to K class and then upgrade, etc...at the end the supervisor came by and do all the work...so maybe she's just didn't know what she's doing and gave you a F tag :p

And no, my friend has never got an op-up on LAX-NRT...but i have non MPC friends who have been bummed or op-up'd on this route before. It's really up to the check-in agent/supervisor to enforce the upgrade procedures sometimes.

Dream on... but prepare to be disappointed. Repeatedly.

Doesn't hurt to have dream/hope right? ;) But realistically chances are close to zero for GR on an flight that's not full but you never know :)

As said at the beginning, flight's not full, so I'm not expecting one...

Btw I haven't metioned before me and my companion was upgraded to business class by Cathay once ....

And it is interesting to note that both of us are not even asia miles members by then!!

We were just the first 2 people to arrive at the boarding gate and the ground crew just asked for our boarding passes, went back to the gate terminal and printed 2 new business class passes..

I know this is really crazy... coz being non asia mile, we are the last tier on the upgrade list!

That's why on my other posts, some US airlines like Delta have clear cut upgrade rules and all elites can track their upgrade priority vs # of seats avail online.

Guess that's more fair to eveyone and no elites of higher tier will have hard feelings in case lower tiers got upgraded and not them...

I fly alot and with several airlines because of our company's policy of booking us at the lowest refundable fare avail in the market at that time, but so far, the only free upgrade I experienced in my life is with Cathay..

There will be no upgrade for anyone on your flight to JFK. If you say it is wide open, then it will be on the day. Why would CX upgrade for no reason. They only would if perhaps it was someones birthday/anniversary or certain amount of miles celebration. Even then, CX has no obligation to do that.

Upgrade is not something to be expected, CX will only do it if it benefits them. e.g. oversold in Economy but open in business. CX would prefer to have many people seated as possible so will except all over booked passengers and then upgrade passengers usually in order of elite status.

If your flight is open, why make so much fuss. it hardly requires a thread like this. People all over CX network each day obtain BN1. BN2 etc... and dont get upgrades. Sometimes they do, If they are fortunate and lucky.

Your paying Economy so that is what you should prepare yourself for. The CX economy product to JFK is very good with exceptional service. Look forward to good entertainment and service in YOUR class. Who knows, if it is so open you may get more than one seat to your self, but like the upgrade, dont get your hopes up!

This forum has too many threads on upgrades! Whilst they are always exciting to get, there are other more important issues to be discussed on this forum along with the upgrades.

That Happens To me alot on the Regional Flights with Dragon, the girl will always ask the supervisor about anything, I think its just to double check and make sure they don't say the wrong thing, (They're English is not good or new at the job).
