Hawaii - Safe to leave luggage at HNL on overnight layover?

Flying from SEA to HNL, arriving at night, and then on to KIX the next afternoon. I haven't confirmed whether the airline (Delta) will check bags all the way through to KIX from SEA, or whether I'll have to pick them up in HNL and recheck them the next day. Of course, I'd love to get them checked all the way through.

However, do you think that HNL is a safe enough place for the bags to sit overnight? I imagine that they would never make it out of the luggage handling area and be put into some location until the next day, but also wonder if they would end up sitting out in some public area for hours until someone figured out what they were. I'm asking because my search of other threads about the topic found posters saying that bags had been left sitting out in similar situations.

I'll invite folks to comment on your DL-specific question here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/delta-skymiles/1256820-luggage-checked-through-overnight-layover.html and ask that folks concentrate their comments in this thread on your question in the second paragraph re HNL left-luggage safety.
