Italy - Venice Hotel Recommendations Overlooking Canal
We would like some recommendations for hotels in the $200-300 range for our visit in Venice Oct 4-7..preferably with great canal views and close to main attractions in the city--any input most appreciated. Thanks in advance..

i don't think the gritti with canal view comes for $300us.
The NH Manin is right on the Gran Canal at a vaporetto stop beyond the Rialto Bridge. It's in a converted palace. The NH web site has deals and a 4* bid on Priceline may work for this hotel. I was there a couple of years ago - simply lovely.

KEY WORD *Splurge...thanks everyone =)
We're deciding btw the Hotel Gritti, Danieli, or Westin Europa..any thoughts?

I see you just posted on the masterthreads to these properties on the SPG forum, reading those in their entirety will be the most helpful to your decision process and this might help too:

as always, thanks so much sk3--I'm quite overwhelmed by this trip and hotel selections in Venice..then there's the St Regis vs Westin in Rome debate we're deciding as well..and the master threads for each seem like mix bags:confused:

I agree, mixed bags indeed. That's why it's great we have such long, comprehensive threads for each property. It doesn't mean much if 1 or 2 ppl make a certain complaint, or rave about an upgrade, but if it's a consistent theme in the thread then that's something to factor in.
For these SPG properties, the SPG forum of course will have the most useful info.
I've offered this opinion before re Rome's Excelsior vs the STR: if you're after a better chance to get an upgrade I think the Excelsior is the better choice for the logical reason that it has more rooms to be upgraded to than the STR. But ppl have received great Plat upgrades at the STR...

That's what I have read will be going for the STR and Gratti in Venice..going to pay for some stays ..apprently it's high season so the points are off the board depleting me =(
Please do PM me any advice and nice gems and eateries you have as your posts are very thorough from your past Italy trip..we will be going Milan-Como-Venice-Bologna-Florence--Rome...again and as always thanks for being one of the best and solid guys here enlightening us all my friend!!^

does that hotel have closets? we were across the canal when they were finishing it. we asked to see a couple of rooms, but we were deemed too grubby to be admitted. the only other hotel that refused us admittance was the Ritz in Paris.

I compared the three properties here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/14423554-post123.html).

You're very kind, and I've been kind of cheeky with you - on the SPG forum. Sorry for that.
I don't PM - my little hobby here on FT is so that I can share and receive info with the whole "community" if you will....

Katia Parla has a terrific blog, IMO, and I think she's a wonderful source for dining suggestions. You can search her site for your different locations, etc:

Edited to add a disclaimer of sorts for the SlowTravel site. It's as its name implies - a place for SLOW traveling. The site is filled with real Italy lovers who stay for weeks or more at a time in one city. When people post there with questions regarding their typical whirlwind mutli-city trip they're usually chided in some way. But of course you're doing what most people do, just spending a few days in each and moving on. The site is terrific, and should provide you with a great resource - just wanted to explain it to you more fully in case you decide to post over there.

i stayed a couple of times at the europa, and about 10 at the danieli. never at the gritti. only once on points at the danieli(only time with a canal view). once on points at europa(canal view, tiny room). almost all as a plat.
i love the grand public rooms in danieli, and i did not think to many of the riff raff crowded in.
don't know the price of breakfast today, but it was about €50pp last times we were there. can get an excellent breakfast around the corner and up the street for less than €10.
have not stayed in any venice spg hotel in the past 5 years, as i think the value is just not there. can get a jr suite on the grand canal in a gorgeous place for half the price, and with a breakfast and personalized service..

As we will be in Italy starting Sept 19th for one month (Lake Como, Venice, Florence, Rome, and a couple other one night stops) finding all the post here invaluable. Currently in Koblenz, DE. Thanks!

They seemed pretty down to earth when we were there. The front desk staff were young people in green uniforms. The room we were in had a closet and a window onto the canal. At the time it was readily available for a relatively low bid at 4* on Priceline. The garden where they serve breakfast is lovely - unless you hate pigeons. I've been pleasantly surprised by every NH Hotele I've been to.
