Hi all....have a question about people's experience with car rentals last year.

Did you actually have to go pick up the car? Or could you just make the reservation, no show and be charged for it and grab the hit that way?? Thrifty has some great deals at the Philly airport for a weekend day (roughly $16 all in...)...however not sure if it's worth driving an hour down and an hour back on six separate occasions.

If anyone had success last year without having to actually go get the car could you let us know. Thanks!!!

Here's another car rental question.

I very rarely rent from Alamo, but did once earlier this summer. To "thank me" they sent a coupon by email for one free day rental, expires in 6 weeks, no minimum rental length. I tried a sample 1-day rental at the local airport, and it comes out to $4 total (the airport facility charge). Since this is a coupon, not an award rental (like Hertz #1 Club), what are the chances I can get US miles for it? According to usairways.com, you earn 250 miles per Alamo rental. Anybody had a similar situation?

Not 100 % true. At least one guy did not show up :D

And so we continue to publicly discuss this?

I suspect the tightening of rules has as much to do with a lot of public dissemination of loopholes as it does with US and partner dissatisfaction with no revenue from the cheap / free hits.

If other rental car agencies at the PHL airport have low rates you could rent from each of them on the same day. At least cuts down on the number of times you have to drive to PHL.

Not if you're crediting them to the same US account. Terms and conditions state that non-qualifying activity includes:

Multiple car rentals that occur on the same day

This year's T&Cs state that only one rental per day counts as a hit so this will not work. Hotel stays have the same restriction.

I think the chance of getting miles is greater than zero. Alamo is owned by National and I believe uses the same systems. Redeeming a free day coupon on National will generate another rental credit as long as you pay something, in this and my case the airport fees. If you have nothing else to use the coupon towards give it a go.

Dang, I did five rentals in less than one hour last year. :D

Oh well, I'll have to make separate trips this time.

But I don't understand why US closed this "loophole." As long as we pay for six rentals, why does it matter if we do them on one day or on six different days? The rental agency is still getting the same revenue. It's not like signing up for Netflix and then cancelling after just one month.

But I don't understand why US closed this "loophole." As long as we pay for six rentals, why does it matter if we do them on one day or on six different days? My guess: because GS isn't just about ginning up revenue, but also about building brand awareness & promoting lasting customer relationships with the partners. (Also, a "real" rental is likely to generate additional revenue for CDW, GPS rental, fuel charges, and the like.) If US could realistically distinguish between "real" rentals and a GS'er doing the entire deal at the counter, I'm sure they would, but they don't because it would be complicated. By contrast, weeding out multiple rentals in a single day is easy.

Well done! The issue for me is that rentals at PHL are usually cheap only on Sat-Sun. So I'd have to arrange that over three weekends, at the very least.

Does anyone know if hertz posts the date you pick up the car or return it as the activity date? I usually take hertz points but I am picking up a car on 9/12 for return 9/15. If I am not going to get a hit I'd rather continue to take the hertz points.

Anyone have any problems with consecutive 1-day rentals from the same agency? I do regular 2-day weekend rentals at National and I remain fairly close to the rental location, making a car-swap on a Saturday night a rather painless exercise. In my experience, the rates don't really change on 1-day vs. 2-day rentals. (Although 3-day rentals are cheaper due to 3rd-Day-Free coupons.)

Would two National rentals post as 2 hits? If not, would one booked through Nationalcar.com followed by one booked through Alamo.com count as 2? Or would I need to walk across the street and hit Hertz or Avis?

It's a semi-small station: I wonder if the National people would bristle at this idea. I know them fairly well...I'd probably just be honest and tell 'em I'm doing it for the US Airways promo.

I would do National and Hertz. National requires you to keep the car Saturday night to get the lower weekend rates so swapping early would lead to a cost greater than just duplication of airport fees. I have limited experience with Hertz but I beleive I had a same day return at weekend rates last year.

My car strategy is to take advantage of the Alamo $15 rentals on the two weekends where that offer overlaps Grand Slam and pickup 2 rentals I would have incurred naturally. The remaining 2 rentals will be easy hits if I need them at the end of the promotion.

pinniped
Sep 7, 11, 1:52 pm
The more I think about it, I may just do a couple extra weekend rentals at my hometown HLE. For one, the swapping would nullify some 1-2-FREE credits since those need to be 2-day rentals to count. Second, the HLE rentals can sometimes be under $20/day all in since there aren't any airport fees - just local sales tax.

I'll probably be at 4 or 5 hits without doing anything unusual anyway.

Thanks for the $15 rate reminder. I like the sound of it. One potential issue is the rate requires a Saturday overnight, and I was planning on the rent-and-return-in-one-motion trick at the counter without driving. $15 is a great rate but it means I'd have to KEEP an actual car for a night?! Heavens, the things they ask of us.

Have you (or others) done the "rent and return at the same counter trick" successfully in the past? This is my first time going for the GS promotion and I was planning on trying to do this, but I wasn't sure if they'd go for it or not. Does anybody actually put up a fight about it? You'd think that they'd be more than willing to do it since they just get free money, right?

Yes, I did this last year, as did several others. It depends on the counter agents' willingness and how long the line is -- and busy the office is -- but most FTers reported no problems, or very few. In my case I told the agent about the promo in a friendly, almost silly way, and they ate it up and were very nice about processing everything.

Ditto. Had 4 fifteen minute reservations on four different Saturdays. I incorporated a stop at my Hertz city edition office into my weekend errands. Never got in a car. Counter guys thought it was both silly and amazing - 100,000 frequent flyer points ~is~ a big deal to most people.

Can you receive promotional miles from car rental and a "hit" as well.

Do you have to go through the link with U.S airways website to book for the car? I believe I have perks with my Amex Platinum card on car rental.

Am I able to receive the perks on using AMEX and promotional miles as well.

Thanks very much.

I have what I hope is an easy question. Can I book a car rental anywhere and just use my Usair Div. Mile number on the reservation or do I need to book through the Usair website? I noticed that they put a code in the reservation (maybe US10?). Can I use a coupon code like Costco's and enter my DM number and still get a hit?

Perhaps you have to check on your bill/order that your number is printed on.

For the US Airways GS hit, you just need a rental that posts US Airways miles. If there are other promotions, bonus miles, Amex perks, etc., I imagine those are fine to achieve...as long as the rental posts US miles.

For most people, this will mean flipping your National preference from Free Days to air miles. I'll be giving up 1/5th of a Free Rental Day for each US hit. Since those free days are worth $100-120 each to me, these aren't the cheapest hits...but they're 6 that I need as part of my overall run to 80,000 miles so I guess it's worth it.

I think you need to have your car rental profiles set to earn Dividend Miles as your rental reward preference. So log into your National Emerald Club account, or your Hertz #1 club account, or Budget Rapid Rewards, etc, and make sure US Airways is selected as your preferred partner.

Then, as long as your car rental program number is on your reservation, you should have the miles post after your rental.

I routinely book two or three rentals for the same day, make a decision the day of as to which one I want, and that's it...I've never once cancelled any of the reservations I haven't used, and I've never been charged, despite them having my CC# as part of the reservation, etc. I've done this dozens and dozens of times.

It sounds like some people from last year got to know an off-airport location and specifically asked to be charged so they could get their hits. I've never been charged for a no-show either. (Obviously you would on a Hotwire/Priceline rental but those aren't in scope for GS hits...)

I was researching this earlier and found this at Budget's website ;"If you don't show up for your rental, we'll refund the full prepaid amount less a $50 no-show processing fee."

The question is...does the no show fee constitute a bonus earning rental?...

If anyone is doing a car rental anyway (e.g. not just for a hit), you can register with Hertz Gold for free (cancel within a year). Members also get 500 Bonus points which is enough for a weekend day rental.

1.Click http://goldplus.hertz.com/
2.Register for Gold Membership (Free & $60 Value)
3.Earn 500 bonus points, Qualify for 1 Free Weekend Day Rental

You can transfer 600 points to US Airways, so you'll still need to get 100 points somehow if you're looking to transfer points.

600 Points = 500 Miles or 1200 Southwest Points or 1,000 Priority Club Points.

* it takes up to 4 weeks for bonus points to post. *

Also, Hertz is offering $5 1-way rentals. Conditions apply of course: https://www.hertz.com/rentacar/bb-8657875/drive-into-arizona-for-as-little-as-$5-per-day-special-offer

I doubt US would be tricked into thinking a transfer was a rental. There is no hit for a transfer. Just for rentals. If a transfer does work though, let us know! I can't remember anyone trying it last year.

No, but you could (at least at Hertz) have your parents rent & pay for a car, and have it credited to your US account.

(if the car is rented under your name, then you need to be there and pick it up and your parents needs to pay the daily additional driver fee)

With AAA you can generally get a $10/day weekend rental after the $10 off/day coupon listed on the Hertz website. The best deal is to book [as a member] on the aaa.com site, NOT from hertz.com, where the rate is usually about $13-18/day before taxes and coupon for a compact/economy.

Last weekend I had a compact car three days @ IAD for total of $31.24.

The $15 rate is available at BUR and comes to $24.80. However, when booking, I don't see any way to enter my DM account information. Since this is a "last minute" rate -- although I booked it for late September -- I'm concerned that it's not eligible to earn miles. Any thoughts on this?

Can anyone point me to comprable, or better, rates in LA? Thanks and good luck to all.

So has someone yet found the cheapest rentals for the GS11 promo?

Weekend rates at PHL are around $15 with AAA. All in about $20 with taxes and fees.

When I set up my profile I entered all my info including my partner airline US Air. I think I checked a box indicating to accept surcharge and that it was my preferred choice. Set up an account if you have not done so and you should be able to update your profile with your DM info.

It sounds like some people from last year got to know an off-airport location and specifically asked to be charged so they could get their hits. I've never been charged for a no-show either. (Obviously you would on a Hotwire/Priceline rental but those aren't in scope for GS hits...)

Is this confirmed? Hotwire, Priceline car rentals don't count then?

Hi all....have a question about people's experience with car rentals last year.

Did you actually have to go pick up the car? Or could you just make the reservation, no show and be charged for it and grab the hit that way?? Thrifty has some great deals at the Philly airport for a weekend day (roughly $16 all in...)...however not sure if it's worth driving an hour down and an hour back on six separate occasions.

If anyone had success last year without having to actually go get the car could you let us know. Thanks!!!

Sorry about the above empty post...:(
Last year 3 airport parkings at Thrifty yielded 300 US miles and qualified for a Grand Slam hit. Does anyone know if it will this year? It sounds like no, as it is not a "rental"

Thanks. I will give that a shot. I tried entering the code from the DM site, but that bounced the rate up about ten bucks.

Can't you get a one way rental from Manhattan to LGA at a very good rate?
Seems like I read that somewhere on FT....

Found it here. (http://www.flyerguide.com/wiki/index.php/NYC_Airports_to_Manhattan_Transportation_FAQ#Hertz _Special_One-Way_Rates) Hertz one way rates.

Lowest rate I could find was $66 ai. Looks good for those on an expense account.

I just did the Hertz hourly rate in Manhattan and it worked: receipt shows DM number and "50 miles awarded." $15.29 a/i: $12 rate + $0.75 FF surcharge + $2.54 taxes. Use code HRLYD. The reservation shows a higher daily rate at first, but the counter agent knocks it down to hourly in person (and on the contract) upon timely return.

I'm sure this will be a stupid question, but I'm new to GS, so please forgive my ignorance/confusion:

For car rentals, you can get max 6 hits per member - what exactly does that mean?
- is it 6 hits total from car rentals, no matter which rental company (so potential to get up to 6 hits from Dollar alone) OR
- is it 1 hit per rental car company, up to 6 hits total over the 8?

6 rentals, any mix of vendors. Last year I got 5 from National and 1 from Hertz. With AAA discounts Hertz can be the low price on weekends.

Nice. Any luck doing this without actually taking the car anywhere? I'd hope they won't make me circle the block, especially as gas is included I would think they'd let you just charge it.

I circled the block halfway, parked for 10-15 minutes while enjoying the fresh carpet and laughing silently about it (I'm easily amused), then returned it. I never asked to skip taking the car, so I can't say, but the agent seemed easygoing enough to probably have agreed to a car-less rental. Depends which agent/location maybe.

I love to think about all the normal working people who see weird situations due to the GS, but are ignorant of what's going on. The drivers with empty shuttles, the poetry slam box office workers with hundreds of unclaimed tickets, the sales manager at swarovski who sees a huge spike in demand for christmas ornaments in September.

Similar to the Verizon internet store workers who saw orders for thousands of chargers and screen protectors for discontinued phones in a 24 hour period last month...

Freakonomics in action!

You can transfer 600 points to US Airways, so you'll still need to get 100 points somehow if you're looking to transfer points.

600 Points = 500 Miles or 1200 Southwest Points or 1,000 Priority Club Points.

How to transfer hertz points to US DM? I have 1800 points that are of no use... on hertz.com I just see this:

Easy to Redeem

You can redeem your #1 Awards Points for Hertz rentals in The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain The United States, and Canada the choice is yours.

Just did a "counter rental" at Hertz on Independence Blvd in Charlotte NC for me and my spouse (spouse not present). Ask for Keith. He is very open to doing more for Grand Slammers (but maybe not Poetry Slammers, ha ha). He said if you call that location and ask for him he can give you the best US Air discount and any coupons available. It's a small location so he would rather know what you are doing than bring in an extra dozen cars that are not going to leave the lot. You do need to show up for a card swipe he says. Rental total with tax: $17.27

I have done two Hertz hourly rentals already. Here is some more info:

- Hertz hourly rentals can be returned to ANY location in Manhattan, not just the one you used for pick-up. Therefore I pick up my car at the garage across the street from my apartment (downtown) and drive to a Hertz garage 6 blocks from my office (midtown). This saves me the $2.25 subway fare in the morning.

- Gas is included in the rate.

- The $12 ($15.29 total with taxes) cost per rental is only valid Mon - Thurs. The Fri - Sun rate is $3 more.

- Rate codes HOURLY and HRLYD are the same. HRLYD is only valid Mon - Thurs for $12 whereas HOURLY is available any day (but will be $15 on Fri - Sun).

I am presently in Europe, expecting to hire a car in Hungary and cannot access the GS11 page. I am asked to register, which I have done already, but nothing is possible beyond that. I cannot access the partner activities on the GS page. Is that it, or are there other avenues to finally get at the GS page?
I have researched the car partners (not from the GS page, of course) and Hertz would be a possibility for me. But the reservation needs to be done through the GS page, is that so?
Thanks for any help.

As long as you've registered for GS11, you don't need to reserve through the US Airways site. Just make sure with the agent that they have your Dividend Miles number on the reservation when you pick up the car.

Actually I'll be in LA for a wedding for a Sat-Mon weekend in early October. Instead of getting a 3-day car rental on Hotwire or Priceline like I usually do, I went through the US Airways codes and booked three separate daily rentals (Alamo 1st day, Dollar 2nd day, Alamo 3rd day) for $30 each day a/i. I may be spending ~$20 more than I would have with hotwire/priceline and have to deal with the hassle of going to LAX each day to return old car / rent new car, but I see my "spend" for GS as the incremental cost of $20, minus 800 miles received for the rentals--so about $10!

The 500 Hertz points are worth so much more than just to burn for a hit.

Living in NYC, i value Hertz points a lot, as 500 points gets me a weekend rental from my HLE which typically charges $100 / day. Without a car and limited other options, it's something that i would begrudgingly pay. Great redemption value.

You should confirm with the customer service rep at the rental desk where you pick up the car that you're getting US Air miles with the rental.
I saw a post somewhere saying the non-airport locations for Avis and Budget don't give mileage awards. When I've tried to make reservations with Avis for airline miles, I consistently get a red warning message that the non-airport locations don't accept the code for an airline. I was able to get the double miles coupon for a Budget reservation when I picked up the car at the airport and turned it in at a non-airport location, but it was expensive so I cancelled that reservation. One thing that was interesting about Budget is that you have to cancel your reservation a day or two before you're scheduled to pick up the car or they have the right to charge you a high cancellation fee. Hertz and Avis don't have any cancellation fees so that really got my attention.

Do you know if you can use any discounts for these hourly rentals to bring the cost down? I am also in the Boston area and was thinking of doing a rental or two, but $29 is pretty expensive given that it will take me 45 minutes each way just to get downtown.

I tried all discount coupons online. Most of them don't work for hourly rate. I called CS and rate is $15 per hour for weekend. But the TKT&Cnv surcharge is $10.60 plus taxes it goes to $28.43.

Parking the car and taking T total comes to $38 which is not cheap.

I wrote to hertz about paying the TKT&Cnv surcharge for an hourly rental and selected yes to "contact me" option. Will see if they will do something about it.

Update: I don't think we can do anything about the surcharges. Its required by law.

B. "Vehicular Rental Transaction Contract"

The $10 CCF surcharge is imposed upon each vehicular rental transaction contract in Boston. The term "vehicular rental transaction contract" includes any written agreement setting forth the terms and conditions governing the use of a vehicle provided by a rental company for thirty continuous days or less, except as provided in Subsection III. D of this TIR. See generally G.L. c. 90, § 32E ½. A written agreement may be executed upon tangible media or electronically, such as through the Internet.

Vendors must collect the $10 CCF surcharge on each vehicle rental contract in Boston. A vehicle rental contract is “in Boston” (1) when the vehicle is received by the customer at a business location of the rental company in Boston or (2) when the vehicle is not received by the customer at a business location of the rental company, if the vehicle is received by the customer in Boston. Types of vehicles subject to the surcharge include, but are not limited to the following:

Passenger car
Truck
Van
Trailer (but the surcharge is not imposed on rental of a trailer hitch).

I found a Thrifty rental for $20.16 (per day all in) in TUS from 10/30 - 10/31. It's interesting because when I start and end the rental at 11am I get this rate. If I choose another time like 1PM I get a much higher rate. It might be that weekend rates end at noon or something like that. Also there is a 3 times miles special if you rent a compact for 2 days or longer and you use promo code US10. It's going to be my rental run weekend as I am returning a Thrifty car on the 29th and then picking up a Dollar car returning it on the 30th and finally picking up a Thrifty car on the 30th and returning it on the 31st.

Also, they normally transfer these to the airline in about two weeks after the car is returned although this may vary by airline depending on when they do their sweeps. My experience is that the promotion codes for airline bonuses are accepted at all the Hertz airport and off-airport locations in the US.

I think their rules are that your first rental after obtaining the #1 Gold is that you must show up, in person, to have them swipe the actual card you have registered. After that, you don't need to swipe, but it might be worth talking to the manager rather than just no-showing and expecting the miles.

Rental contract shows that I had it for 8mins (had to wait in line to return it) and clearly shows that my US FF acct will be awarded 50 miles. I intend to "wash, rinse, repeat" when I visit NYC over the next two months for the remaining 5 hits!

The airport lots pass on a $10/rental LAWA (airport authority) fee, along with some other levies, the hotels are considered off-airport and do not.

I use the Hertz desk at the LAX Hilton and save a bundle. Not as much selection as the airport lot, but the guys there take care of me...

Are you sure the hourly rental can make a hit? If that is, it will be a great hit then?

Just go to your local Hertz 'HLE' and tell them about the promo and that you would be willing to part with 15-20$ for a rental that you will not drive. Should be no biggie.

Not 100% sure until the first sweep next week starts posting miles. However, the receipt clearly shows 50 US miles are generated from the hourly rental. I only do one rental per day. Will post back to confirm whether these count as hits.

It should. My receipt shows the rate as $15/day (real rate is $45 per day) and that i rented for one day. It doesn't mention anywhere that the rental is only for an hour.

The following conversation took place this weekend:

Me: Oh, I have to run over to the Park Plaza Hotel on Monday.

DW: Why?

Me: I'm having an affair.

DW: (After five minutes of laughing): Seriously, why?

Me: What, you don't believe somebody would have an affair with me?

DW: Okay, what points scheme is this related to?

In Boston, the Hertz "hourly rental" place is across from the Boston Park Plaza hotel. The guy told me that I needed to take the car out once he did the paperwork, but once he realized that I truly had no interest in it, he just checked me back in. He understood once I told him it was a mileage promo. Total was $25.60, due to non-amortized Convention Center tax. The receipt said "50 miles awarded" and gave my DM number.

Total transaction time: about four minutes. It's worth noting that, when I told my wife that, she started to get nervous that I actually was having an affair.

so I was searching for cheap rental cars around where I live (MCO) and found that alamo locaion at SFB (sanford international airport) right north of orlando, actually not too far from where I live has $18.99 all in for sunday rentals (incude surcharge for credit to US DM). just in case this is helpful for anyone. I am doing a rental on 10/2 sunday for this price. This includes the 10% discount for alamo insider which I am sure you all have already signed up for GS right ;)

If flying out of PHL any time soon I did a one way rental from KOP area and then a one way back and were under $25 with AAA discount each way. Not as cheap as others are posting but if you were going to park or take a cab it come out about even. Otherwise the $25 is the cheapest I have found which is about $8 more than the $17 I paid last year.

HERTZ Rental For GS QUESTIONS!

I Have 600 points at my Hertz gold account,
(which is good enough for 1 rental)
and also $100 credit on my Hertz Connect account,
(which is good for 3 separate hourly rental)

My Question is,
Would I get GS hit if I use my hertz points??
Would I get GS hit if I rent a car just for an hour using my credit??

Thank you!:)

If you're renting near LAX, try one of the rental car counters in the hotels near the airport.

The airport lots pass on a $10/rental LAWA (airport authority) fee, along with some other levies, the hotels are considered off-airport and do not....

Any regular Hertz/Avis/etc rental will count as a hit.

Avis and Budget non-airport locations will NOT earn miles and will NOT count as a hit. Exceptions may exist, but this is the norm for these two brands. See the note at the bottom of this page:

Non-airport locations for other participating brands should be fine.

Yes I stopped in at my local Hertz HLE and had them pull up my reservation for this weekend. They saw my AMEX Plat CDP and the PC144314 (underage waiver) coupon and said should be no problem. Yes, I don't see anything cheap in Phoenix. Due to about $20 in taxes/fees, the airport rentals are running at least $40/day for a weekend. Taxes are about $9 for a Hertz local edition, but the base rate is much higher, making the cheapest still around $40/day.

Officially, there's nothing that says that it would. However, I'd say that it's unknown until someone gives it a try.

Personally, I find Hertz points to be pretty valuable unless they're about to expire. 600 Hertz points converts to 500 miles.

No, and I would consider that to be a very poor use of valuable Hertz points since there are multiple other ways to get the points.com exchange for little or no cost.

Right. There's obviously not a Car Rental Transfer hit. But if you were to transfer points from Hertz to US, would it appear to US the same as if it were a rental earning miles?

I used this code try both sat and sun in SFB and the rate is $38.99 plus tax and fees. but if I do it on friday (the day before) with the same CorpID, I get $14.89 + tax and fees... I double checked and the ad does say weekend days. :) of course the tax and fees for SFB is ~$13 so the total is $28 a day. I got my original rental booked for 10/2 for $12.89 but for the life of me, I can't get the same rate any more.

I am probably going to do this within the next week since I don't rent cars too much for pleasure and if I do rent for pleasure, I can always find good deals. My thought is it may look like a car rental and how will US Air know it's a transfer vs a rental.
Off topic: Where I find my Hertz points most valuable is when I use 1200 points for a one-day, one-way rental. The cash price could be over $100/day and might also require a two-day rental. It's been a huge savings when driving home from IRROPS cancellations in ATL and CLT or when booking an open jaw.

But great find, and I will use this since I will be in ORD during a weekend.

Will monitor if points are added !

I did two Manhattan rentals this week while there on business.

Now I'm back in my suburban home and I thought I'd do some searching for cheap rentals. Turns out there's a Hertz location as part of a gas station nearby I never noticed.

After searching online for some promo codes I did:

CDP: 211762 (Amex Plat)
PC: 162330 (?? No idea what this is, but it's $5 off, seems to work on Saturdays but not Sundays).

That gets the rental down to about $15 base rate, $19 a/i.

Gonna do one on Saturday and see how it goes.

I love FT! I had a Hertz rental using Amex Plat CDP for tmw too but could not find a PC for a one-day weekend. You just saved me 4 dollars per rental! Thanks! Mine came out to be $19 a/i too!

Side note: I do have a Amex Plat card and can use it if I have to, but is it an issue if I don't use it while using the Amex Plat CDP? Any problems with them giving me the same rate or miles posting if I don't use the Amex Plat card with the Amex Plat CDP?

Glad it worked for you too! What I love about this is I had no idea there was a Hertz in my town, and it turns out it's almost within walking distance, it's just a gas station I never use so I hadn't noticed.

I just hope the PC works, I just googled "hertz promo codes" and saw that somewhere, listed as $5 off on weekends. Are there restrictions to promo codes? I don't want to show up and find out that it's limited to members of the Cherokee Nation or something.

As to the Amex Plat I have no idea, I assume if you bring it you're fine, even if you don't use it to pay, but I'm not sure.

I booked a Budget rental using AA miles + $34 out of pocket. Can I still apply this rental to get dividend miles? The AA miles didn't completely cover the rental, so this technically counts as a "mileage qualifying" rental, right?

I just "picked-up" my Hertz rental for a 1-day rental. The preliminary agreement shows "Additional Charges: Frequent Flyer: US (my DM number)" and the charge estimate across from it being "T$ ****"

Can any Hertz guru please tell me is that correct?

As I understand there is surcharge of $1 a day for FF miles, but it does not show that amount to be charged. Or does it only show on the final receipt along with the number of miles I've earned?

Have only rented with National before and they showed it right from the beginning.

Thanks

That's how it shows on my contract, too. On the final bill, it tells you the final charge based on the actual number of miles earned (which is based on the number of days I actually keep the car). So on my 1-day rental with double miles, I earn 100 miles with a total $0.75 "FF Surcharge."

Edited to add: The 75 cent FF Surcharge is the same for 1-day even if a promo code gives bonus miles. See followup post below.

Looks like your Alamo is sold out of the $15 rate at the Austin airport this weekend. I just checked next weekend and that $15 rate shows up. Unfortunately it looks like you get zinged with $15 of taxes at the Austin airport, so total is $30. My recommendation would be to try an off airport Hertz location and these codes (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/17157446-post185.html).

Just to update, since that was my post. I went today and did one of these rentals, total came out to $19.31 ($16.01 before taxes) which is almost as good as the Manhattan hourly rate.

My only problem was the attendant had no idea what I was talking about (not taking the car) and he thought I was trying to use the rental as a parking space since I had driven myself. He kept saying no I couldn't leave my car even if I didn't rent a car.

I finally had to talk to his supervisor who understood what I was getting at even though he was unfamiliar with the Grand Slam. Gonna go back tomorrow and do another one, hopefully they don't freak out again.

Depends on who you talk to I guess. For me they just upped the mileage a mile, it's less work for them not even having to mess with the keys.

Worst case scenario you drive it around the block for 5 minutes, put a dollar of gas in the tank, and return it.

Makes more sense. But he kept it at -$15 since it was his mistake. Normal -$5 would make it $19 a/i, still not too bad. Looks like MMMV next week to see if he can give -$15 again, not sure how much authority he's got to keep doing that (and don't want to jeopardize his job at the same time), especially if the car's just going to be unrented if I dont rent. No one would be renting at higher rate than what I'm paying. A sale's a sale.

i need to complete my rental (as in return the car) by 11/14, when the grand slam promo ends? or can i just book it before 11/14 but not actually complete my rental till after?

thanks in advance for the clarification!

It all depends on the activity date that posts to your US account. IIRC most rental companies use the pickup date as the activity date, there should be some data points rolling in over the next few weeks. Which company were you planning to use?

I remember someone saying their Friday rental posted on the following Thursday?

I'm wondering this, too. My Hertz rental was on Sat, 9/17, and nine days later, the miles still are not showing. My receipt does show my FF# and that I would be receiving 100 miles. I've been hesitant to do another Hertz rental b/c this first one is taking so long.

Hertz tends to post miles slowly. Here's my entry from last year:

9/25/2010 10/07/10 HERTZ CAR RENTAL BONUS 50

It took 12 days. And yes, Hertz seems to post miles on Thursdays, from my other recent experiences.

No problem. Hertz is extremely reliable when it comes to posting miles. It just takes a while sometimes.

I personally don't know how to drive. I only have a non driver ID.. can I just book a car rental and no show and get a hit??? Anyone try it before?? what car rental company I can use???

not trying to sound like a jerk, but why would a rental CAR company rent you a car if you don't have a license to drive?

Likewise, thanks for the info. Glad to know that it's probably just taking a while.

Is it possible, you can rent a car for someone who can drive in your family/friends? You can use your credit card/DM number etc for this.

Because if you're just going to go to the rental counter and check-in and check-out at the same time, you never drive the car. It might work.

and that person has to have a DL. a DL HAS to be presented and noted on the sale. a car agency is not going to put anyone's name on a rental if they don't have a DL. think about the liability of that. they're in the rental car business, not "do 10 minutes of paperwork to do a fake rental". we are renting the cars when we do this.

I've gotten a PM advising me that the manager at the Boston HLE location refused to put their US mile on because it was an hourly. Thus, I'm going to wait for my first hit to register (rented a week ago) before renting again. Not sure why this is bothering me, but there's plenty of time left in the promo and have time for "better safe than sorry."

Note: I have only received one PM stating this, so I'm not trying to start a panic here. Just a data point.

I started reading the thread in its entirety, but then realized there are 17 pages and I do not have the time to read them all, so I apologize in advance if this has already been asked and answered.

Does the rental agreement have to be in the name of the US Airways account holder? We often rent cars on the road, but my travel partner always rents the car their name and pays using a CC also in their name. It is almost impossible for me to alter that.

Thanks

I know for certain that putting someone else's DM number on a rental can earn miles for the holder of the DM account. However, I can not guarantee that this strategy will work every time.
