I have an upcoming conference in Bremen and will have some free time - mostly half days - afternoons and or evenings. I know very little about the area and would be open to suggestions as to things to do, places to visit, or even restaurants for snacks or a meal that fit into this time schedule. Thanks.

I would recommend an afternoon sitting outside in the plaza in front of the Rathaus and the Roland statue. There are several cafes here, and if the weather is nice it is a great spot to sit and enjoy a Becks. This is also where the Bremen Stadtmusikanten (sp?) statue is. Another good way to pass the time is take the tram and get off by the river and go for a nice walk by the river.
Very close to the town square is a good brewpub restaurant called Schüttinger Brauerei. I'd recommend it for dinner.

Additional suggestions...:
Take a walk round the Schnoor Quarter or along Böttchergasse. Look at the mummies in the Bleikeller underneath the cathedral.
If you have time to venture further afield, there is Bremerhaven with its maritime history and its museum of emigration, and there is the artists' colony in the picturesque village of Worpswede.

^^
We spent a night at the Bremen Hilton, well located on the edge of the picturesque old city. The following day, we spent in Bremerhaven. The Museum of Emigration is outstanding, showing different periods in history when there was significant emigration from Europe and where in the world people went. It is really, really well done. I would visit again if I was in the area.

Try to take tour through the old city hall. Very impressive historic building. Also the restaurant under the city hall "Rathskeller" is worthwhile. A bit touristic but still they have good food.

Ooops (see my location ;) ). I didn't see the thread earlier but there isn't much that I can add.
For general information, this website might be of interest:
Bremen Tourist Information (http://www.bremen-tourismus.de/btz/english/bremen.cfm?m=0.02)
I'd also recommend to visit the Viertel. That's the area southeast of Domsheide, starting at the Ostertorsteinweg (http://maps.google.de/maps?gcx=w&q=bremen%20ostertorsteinweg&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=de&sa=N&tab=wl) and followed by Vor dem Steintor. It's kind of alternative, but if you are open to that, you'll like it. If you want to have dinner or lunch, I suggest to go to Loui & Jules (http://www.loui-jules.com/) (pizza & pasta) or Don Carlos (http://www.don-carlos-bremen.de/Eingang/eingang.html) (Spanish and mediterranean style cuisine). Reservation is strongly recommended.
If you prefer Bremen-style food, please check out Schuettinger (http://www.schuettinger.de/) close to the Rathaus (they're brewing their own beer!).
