Italy - Suggestions for Rome to Amalfi drive over 2 days

We will soon be leaving Rome on a Tuesday morning in a rental car and need to be in Positano by Wednesday evening. Can you suggest a scenic/interesting route and location/hotel for Tuesday night?

~200EUR for the hotel.

I am planning a similar drive later this year. My current thinking is a stop at Reggia di Caserta on the first day before staying the night somewhere around or in Naples. Then seeing a bit of Naples on day 2 before making our way to the Amalfi Coast (planning to stay closer to Sorrento).

A lot of people say skip Naples, but have seen plenty of opinions that it is worth a visit. And a recent episode Anthony Bourdain covered Naples; my wife wants to try the pizza at one of the places he visited, Pizzeria Pellone.

The drive from Naples to sorrento is a little crazy! Drivers go very quick and very tight bends on the coast, small cars battle to pass each other etc
I would almost hire a private driver (like we did in July) to do that route...and then once in Sorrento, or wherever you plan to go...buses, trains and taxis for the short distances
It is paradise!

Ended up doing one night in Sorrento, which was perfect. Car rental is defintely the way to go, in order to drive out/up to end of peninsula and day trip to Ravello. Just drive slowly and it's no sweat.
