India - Travel itinerary for a visa to India

Dear All

My wife and I need visas to travel to India (British and Australian passport holders). A prerequisite for the visa application is a flight itinerary/ticket. Does it need to be a ticket or is immigration pretty easy going at BOM for instance even though one may have provided the following itinerary on AA - 2 December ORD/DEL for the visa application but actually ends up flying in on a different itinerary/ticket, say LH on 10 December FRA/DEL. Has anyone experienced such a problem?

Thoughts welcome

From what I've heard, an itinerary is more than sufficient to get the visa. Don't need to provide them with an actual ticket. And I guarantee that once you land in India, the customs officer will not double check your proposed itinerary with your actual one.

the itinerary and a hotel booking is just fine. If you change your itinerary and book different hotels later that doesn't matter either.
