Hoping to get some advice on best hotels to watch the military planes landing and/or taking off from our hotel during the Miramer Air Show Sept. 30th thru Oct. 2nd. 2011.
Don't really want to pay to go to the show with 100,000 people, but if I could suprise my husband with a room where we could see the jets coming and going from hotel balcony, that would be SO awesome!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are a few hotels: A Holiday Inn, a Best Western, and a Comfort Suites that are on Miramar Road, just off of the I-15, which, I'm quite sure, if you were on the correct side of the hotel, you would get a fine view of the show. However, if you were on the other side of the hotels - facing Miramar Rd, rather than facing the airbase, you would not see anything. And you won't be on a balcony, as these rooms don't have them, you'll be viewing the show through the window of your room. Note, I am sure that one side of the Holiday Inn has an unobstructed view of the base. The Comfort Suites and the Best Western, though, one of them would partly obstruct the view of the other, and I can't remember which one is the one that is in front of the other one, with respect to the airfield itself.
But I am compelled to point out that the Miramar Airshow is a free admission event. They have grandstands for which they charge extra, for preferred seating, but something like 95% of the folks who go get in under free general admission and parking is also free. I've gone 3 times, and never paid for preferred seating.
FWIW, there is a Groupon deal today for 2 grandstand tix to the Miramar air show for $11.
