Experience the thrill of flying a high performance aircraft. FlyerTalk is teaming up with a Reno Air Racer Radial Velocity to help support the Jason Dahl Scholarship fund (http://dahlfund.org/). Radial Velocity races in the T-6 class at the Reno Air Races (http://www.airrace.org/) and will be providing a ride to the winner of a raffle supporting the scholarship fund if we raise $5,000 for it.
Radial Velocity, a T-6 advanced trainer, was used to train fighter and bomber pilots in World War II. The aircraft has been rebuilt. Owner and pilot, John Lohmar, now races it in the Reno Air Races. This high performance two-person aircraft placed third overall in last year's T-6 class race. We have a separate push to get the FlyerTalk logo on the plane (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/communitybuzz/1250944-would-you-like-see-our-ft-logo-plane-racing-reno-air-races.html) in time for the races in Sept.
http://i.imgur.com/RPorwl.jpg
Here is a video of the plane (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uM-M8k9L9Uc) at the 2010 Reno Air Races.
This is truly a unique opportunity. Not only is this high-performance aircraft a part of history, but it is one of the few two-seat racing aircraft that can give rides. You will ride it at a mutually agreed upon time before the end of November in St. Louis. In addition, the raffle is supporting a wonderful cause, the Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship fund.
Captain Jason Dahl was the Captain of United 93 on 9/11, and lost his life that day along with his passengers and crew. A scholarship fund was set up by friends, family, and fellow pilots in his memory to give qualified students the opportunity to attend flight training schools. It’s hard to believe that 10 years have passed since then.
We have set a goal of $5K for FlyerTalk to raise this year. The MegaDo participants alone raised $2K in 2009 and $3K in 2010. If we can get 200 people to each give $25, we can reach that goal.
SanDiego1K
Aug 25, 11, 1:05 am
FlyerTalk's goal is to raise in excess of $5K. If we do, a name will be randomly drawn and the person will receive a ride in Radial Velocity’s T-6 plane.
The ride will be given at Creve Coeur Field (five miles from St. Louis Lambert Airport). The winner should plan to take it by the end of November 2011. The airplane generally goes through an eight-month maintenance phase each year. Delaying it past November would likely result in a one-year delay.
Specific times and dates of the ride are to be coordinated between the winner and John Lohmar. The winner will provide their own transportation and lodging (if needed) to St. Louis.
Raffle donations will be made through the scholarship fund's website (http://dahlfund.org/?page_id=10). You MUST MARK your donation as from a FlyerTalk member.
The deadline for raffle donations will be midnight September 10.
The more you give, the greater your chance of winning.
◦ $25 = 1 chance
◦ $50 = 4 chances
◦ $100 = 10 chances
◦ $200 = 40 chances
◦ $300 = 60 chances
◦ $400 = 80 chances
◦ $500 = 100 chances
It’s a bit tricky to be sure that FlyerTalk gets credit. You have to go all the way thru to the Paypal page. There you will find a link that says “Add special instructions to recipient”. Click it and write “FlyerTalk – handle.” Captain Denny will be tracking donations and reporting back.
Contributions go straight to the fund. Captain Denny will keep track of those given by FlyerTalkers. The winning name will be drawn at the Scholarship dinner in Denver on Sept 11.
Please give even if you know you can't take the ride. It's a worthy cause. Make a special note "FlyerTalk - no ride'.

After many years of being asked I finally signed up and joined the forum. Many of you do not know that I am on the board of directors of the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship.
I always had a void in my life after that tragic day ten years ago. Being retired Navy I understand the loss of comrades but I could not comprehend what we all witnessed that day.
I joined a few of my fellow pilots and Jason's friends to keep his memory alive by starting a scholarship in his name. We raise funds to give finiancial assistance to young men and women seeking an aviation career and your help with this life long project will be greatly appreciated.
I am open for questions you may have about Capt Dahl's scholarship.

After Capt. Jason Dahl tragically lost his life on Sept 11th his wife, Sandy, set up a scholarship in Jasons name to give financial assistance to young men and women interested in an aviation career. Each year we increase our giving and in May we distriputed $15,000 to seven students. Your help will keep Jasons memory alive through those that the scholarship helps. dahlfund.org
After two days we have four members that donated to the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship. Three wanted chances and one member just made a donation to the scholarship. Total donated $150
I was quite suprised to receive a donation from Dublin. Thanks aidanc. My family is from Cork and my wifes family is from Kilfree in County Sligo. We took the whole family, 44 of us, there last summer.

Captain,
First a warm welcome to FT.
Could you explain the structure of the fund? Does it only pay out investment earnings each year or is it also distributing its endowment? I have a strong preference for supporting efforts that can grow in perpetuity and help more people each year as a result (though you'll get a bunch of my money either way through another effort).
Hope to meet you in Denver in a few weeks.

Every year we add to our endowment so at some time it will be sustained by the investment earnings. Currently our scholarships are paid out through donations from corporate sponsors and fund raisers such as Flyer Talk and Mile Point. Jeppesen and Nascar are currently our biggest donors.

Done! Let's get on this one, fellow FTers - it's a great way to remember those valiant aircrew and passengers who were taken from us that infamous day, as well as those in the buildings and their would-be rescuer heroes, and enable someone who dreams of flight to undertake the expensive, long route to accomplish that task.
And here's the deal: I earned a few chances on the ride, and will contribute the Texan ride to another FlyerTalker who contributes to this worthy effort if I win! (I will come to some arrangement with our Community Director over how that person will be chosen if I happen to win.)
Capt Denny, welcome - and I am glad to hear Jepp' is in on this scholarship fund!

Folks, as a (currently inactive) pilot, I can tell you this is a great offer - you won't otherwise have many (if any!) opportunities to fly in a North American T-6 "Texan" anytime soon, never mind give someone the opportunity to fly for a living while trying for this - and I can promise you you will have over 100 chances to win because of the current "will donate on" from several of us.
This was an advanced trainer during WW II and after for USAF, USN (as SN-J) and UK Commonwealth (as the "Harvard"). Harvard was never this cheap! ;)

My life like all others have a history. I was a student at Kent State University when four students were killed protesting the Vietnam war. I joined the United States Navy and retired after 20 years. During that time we remembered the sailors every year that lost their lives during the attack at Pearl Harbor. Now I am at United Airlines and witnessed the loss of my fellow employees during terrorist attacks..
May 4th, December 7th and September 11th are all tragedies that have impacted my life. I am personally involved in the Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship and can promise you that your support will make a difference in the future of these aviators. I will also promise you that I will mentor these young men and women who enter your airline world to provide a customer oriented service which you deserve.

This is actually not the official thread for the FB like, but as long as we're on the topic.
I don't use FB but know others who do, so - I emailed them & suggested if they were interested in helping the cause that they 'like' the appropriate thingy (note the tech term there). My way of contributing. Others might want to do the same.
But kipper mentioned earlier in either this thread or another one for someone to 'remind' her to do the like thing. My reply is you're on both threads enough, remind yourself :p. Some ways to do so would be to send an email to your home email, put one of those rubber bandy things around your wrist to remind yourself, call a relative or the hubby & ask them/him to do so, write yourself a post-it note & put it on your home computer, on the bathroom mirror, etc - you get the idea. :)

Just reached $2600 and it was from an United employee which is a Flyer Talker. At United I started a program on Jan1, 2011 called "Just A Buck". We ask employees to donate "Just A Buch" per paycheck and it is a payroll deduction. Unfortunately we cannot promote our charity on company property or computers so it is difficult to reach everyone. While you are out flying "The Friendly Skies" strike up a conversation with our employees and tell them about the program. If you have Face Book United friends send them the message.
Capt Jason Dahl shares the #1 spot on United's Charitable Giving program so it will be easy to find.
Thanks for all the donations.

Capt Jason Dahl received a $2000 scholarship for flight training when he attended San Jose State University. To apply he had to write an essay titled, "Why I Want To Fly". Not only did he become a captain for United but he spent many years as an instructor teaching our future captains. Following in his footsteps we select our scholarship winners by asking them to write the same titled essay and submit it to our board. The board is comprised of his wife, Sandy and eleven friends which include five United Captains.
This years winners are;
Metro State Charles Brumfiel
SJSU Justin Fernandez
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Andrew Voss
Central Washington University Michael Knuchell
Southern Illinois University Christopher Leffelman
University of North Dakota Daniel Schuman

Capt Jason Dahl worked in the United Training center as an instructor and evaluator. Being considered a management pilot he can pick and choose when he want's to fly. As a line pilot the formal word is called being displaced where as we get a call from a management pilot to fly our trip and we get to stay home and be paid. Not a bad deal. Jason's anniversary was on Sept 14th and he and his wife Sandy had plans so he called the New York based captain and displaced him from his trip...................
As of today we are at $3175

This is a letter from a recent scholarship recipent. We had problems posting it here, so I have posted it on the Radial Velocity FB page. You will read how effective your donations towards the fund will be.
If anyone can tell me how to post/paste/upload a jpg here, let me know.
All right folks, I got some expert guidance on getting the jpg of the letter on the post. Let me give it a shot:

Capt Jason Dahl worked in the United Training center as an instructor and evaluator. Being considered a management pilot he can pick and choose when he want's to fly. As a line pilot the formal word is called being displaced where as we get a call from a management pilot to fly our trip and we get to stay home and be paid. Not a bad deal. Jason's anniversary was on Sept 14th and he and his wife Sandy had plans so he called the New York based captain and displaced him from his trip...................
Denny, you just took my breath away. :(
Lots of articles appearing here in the NYC area. Some of us are having difficulty reading them. Many of us here in NY attended memorials for those that were missing. I have to tell you that it's very uncomfortable attending a memorial, rather than a funeral. The sadness is multiplied without a body. :( So sad.
While the anniversary (sounds so nice??) is approaching 10 years, it still seems like yesterday to those that lost love ones.
Come on Flyertalkers... Step up.
Please excuse me while I get a tissue.

I want to express my extreme thanks to all those who help and support our scholarship fund and helping us turn out some top shelf future aviators. I want you to know every cent goes to students. We have some fine members on our board. An accountant, attorney, microsoft exec,Zerox exec,a professor from Metro state and a number of UAL Captains and many friends of Jason. They all work for FREE. We are all so proud to be suported by your organization. We hope you have a great time with our raffel and auction items. And a great time in Denver. Once again thank you so much!! Sandy Dahl :)

Mrs. Dahl, thank you so much for your post. We are hard at work raising money for the Scholarship fund with the help of Captain Denny and Captain Dan. Captain Dan's brother is giving a ride on his T-6 advanced trainer from WWII to one lucky person if we succeed in raising at least $5,000 for the fund. Captain Denny told me yesterday we are at $3,600, so we are well on our way.
I had a very memorable flight today. Flt 281 ORD-SFO and Neil Armstrong was onboard. I was very humbled and honored.

I am impressed once again by FTers - and of course, by Capt. Jason Dahl.
Knowing he was a trainer for United Airlines and only flew passenger flights a couple times a month to keep up his hours, his dedication to flying (got his pilot's license before his driver's license), I can't imagine a better role model for today's young men and women with air careers in their sights, nor a better memorial - a flying memorial raising funds to help others continue down the lengthy and difficult path to the cockpit.
Our contributions by Sep 10 can help others on this tenth anniversary of the tragedy of Sept 11, so let's get them in!

The donations you made will assist many students with their flight training costs. When Jason was at San Jose State he received a $2000 scholarship when he wrote a winning essay titled "Why I Want To Fly". We use the same idea and ask students from across the country to send us essays with the same title. We choose one student from each college and give out $1000. Jason's school of San Jose and Metro State in Denver each receive $5000. Thank you again for your support.

Can we make it to $6,000?
I used my phone to make my donation, so we're at least a few baby steps closer.

I see $100 and $93, another $250 was also made; squeakr has generously contributed $57, so in my parallel universe and new maths, the Foundation has $500 for esteemed and fortunate member pshuong to match.
If you are saying the $193 was made prior to the pshuong Challenge, we are then $193 short, right?
This all goes that humans can err, but it takes computers to really mess things up. Or an instrument hood and a particularly hardnosed IP.

@:-) The Dahlfund is a 501(c)(3) organization.
@:-) Check with your employer to see if they do matching donations and, if so, whether your donation to Dahlfund will qualify for a match.

Guys, I'm trying to put this as diplomatically as possible, but I don't think the 'mine is bigger than yours' type comparisons between FT and MP help anyone - particularly when one fundraising event was across an entire weekend, with alcohol and lots of whooping and whollering to help grease it and the other was on a website asking for individuals to step up, without any public encouragement.
If SMD had been on FT too, then this would have been on topic (albeit still not for this thread). Sadly, the organisers decided to restrict it to MP, so discussion of fund raising efforts for it are OT for FT, and for this thread.

Both FT and MP have been terrific over the last two weeks. From Mrs. Sandy Dahl and the other board members of The Capt Jason Dahl Scholarship we like to say Thank You. We greatly appreciate your personal and unselfish generosity. Our work together will produce not only skilled aviators but ones that are customer focused. Our team will follow their careed paths and be their mentors.

As many of you know, the National Championship Air Races at Reno-Stead Airport (Nevada) were canceled this year on Friday, 16 September, due to the 4:30 PM local time (2330 GMT/UTC) violent crash of vintage P-51 "Galloping Ghost" piloted by veteran stunt pilot and racer Jimmy Leeward. Though Jimmy and eight others were killed, and about 56 admitted to the hospital, Team Radial Velocity (which was fourth in the trial heats) are all fine and were packing up to go home. Some believe Jimmy's final actions prevented the aircraft from crashing directly into the main grandstands.
The crash is under investigation; some photos seem to show physical loss of an elevator trim tab prior to what some witnesses say was the aircraft's sudden lurch to starboard, half barrel roll and pitch change to near vertical ascending, followed by an abrupt descent at high speed into the tarmac directly in the front of a VIP grandstand.
Link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-14957437)to BBC online report, and link (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/09/16/national/main20107634.shtml)to CBS news report, and link (http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/09/18/national/main20107857.shtml?tag=strip)to CBS' report of the NTSB beginnings of the investigation.
The Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund will undoubtedly do what is expected with the funds so generously donated by FlyerTalkers, and help fund the aspiring careers of young people involved in the very costly, arduous studies and preparations of pilot training. Our best wishes and prayers to members of Team Radial Velocity and to all who were affected by this tragedy.

One of the people I have keeping the pulse at SJSU tells me that my old box seats (66) were involved in the Reno Crash. After Jason's death in 2011 I quit going to the races so as to help with the Dahl Fund. Nuf said.
With the help of my Board and people like you we will work forward to help with The Future of Aviation.
Denny and I have some exciting and FUN ideas for you folks in the near future.
We enjoy being part of your lives...if I dare speak for Denny!

Our Creator moves in mysterious ways, David / pilotddd. You have an important task to do and you weren't in Box 66 - glad you're with us, even as I think with sadness of Jimmy and the fans who are no longer with us and hope everyone injured recovers successfully.
Now we move on, from 9-11 and from this tragedy too; we celebrate life, those here and those before. I hope I can make the celebration you left seaters are putting together, if not, I have a motto too:
"Time flies whether you are having fun or not; it's up to us to make sure we plan some fun." ;)

I'm still hoping to see that number grow closer to $10,000!
Last December when I met Captain Denny & Captain Dave is when I first learned about the Captain Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund. They really caught my attention that evening with what I heard about the Dahlfund, and in other conversations I've had with them since then. The board members of a NFP need to really believe in what they're doing, but this team is truly passionate about something they're doing in honor of their friend and neighbor to help others who want to enter the aviation field. It's an organization I'm happy to have learned about, wish I'd learned about it sooner, and look forward to supporting in any way I can going forward.

A friendly reminder for those whose employers run annual "giving" campaigns (e.g. United Way, etc). Check to see if they allow designated giving to 501(c)(3) organizations that are not affiliated with United Way. When I was completing my designated giving form and turned to the back page, I noticed a section that allowed additional designations to any 501(c)(3) organization in the US. It was easy to raise my annual giving amount with an additional designation to the Capt. Jason Dahl Scholarship Fund
ETA: As noted in kipper's post below, if you want to consider this approach, check with your local agency (United Way, etc) as to what their policy is regarding "processing fees" for designated giving to non-partner agencies.

Small warning with this... At least our local United Way takes a pretty good chunk of what you donate to non-partner agencies for "fundraising and processing fees." Our pledge form reads, "Donor designations to non-partner agencies are assessed both a fundraising and processing fee based on actual historical costs."

Good catch -- when I first spoke with Captain Dave about this a few weeks ago it's something neither of us thought of. I know our local organization isn't quite as harsh, but it's certainly something to be aware of. I'll edit my post above to note this.

Ours is pretty harsh. I forget what the exact percentage is, but I noticed it when I was looking to send mine to Dress for Success.
