I have a choice to start staying at either the Northfield Hilton or the ES in Troy, MI. Does anyone have experience at either that could tell me which I should go with? I've never stayed at an ES, and it sounds like that may be the way to go, but looking for an opinion. Thanks.

We stayed at the Northville Hilton last weekend by using a coupon in the Detroit Free Press for $49 (what a deal!). We did not get upgraded (gold VIP) but we got two breakfast buffet passes and two drinks at the Fitzgerald's Lounge (one of the two restaurants, the other one, Charlie's Crab we did not eat in).
Not a big Hilton, 3 floors, standard rooms are quite large, awesome mattress (or maybe it felt like it after my wife dragged me shopping at the nearby Great Lakes Crossing Mall all day), the pool is large, not too suitable for kids and water was not that warm, no health club available, just two treadmill machines nearby the pool with a TV above them. Good service, pretty clean, carpet did not seem to be new but still nice, very good location just off I-75, we sure enjoyed it especially at that rate. Points/miles did not post yet.
Not sure when you are going but I still have a free drink coupon left. If you stay there and if you want it and it is not too soon, send me an email and I 'll just mail it to you, nothing in return requested (staying at the O'Hare Hilton this weekend, exchange for any coupons there welcome but not necessary.
I still have most of the coupons for hotels available (sorry no more $49 coupons, I was hoping to reuse it but they did take it from me at checkin).
I have:
Southfield Hampton weekend offer $59
Hilton Novi check in Fri or Sat for 3 nights at $99 and get Sun night free
DoubleTree Romulus at Metro Airport $79 incl. breakfast for two Fri, Sat or Sun
Embassy Suites Livonia for two in King, two room suite, incl evening reception, full breakfast, dinner for two with dessert at Cascades restaurant $109 plus 14% tax.
Embassy Suites Troy/Auburn Hills $79 double occupancy, all suite property, indoor pool, sauna, whirlpool/exercise room
Of course subject to availability, no expiration dates. The only one that had an expiration date(12/30)was the one I used.
Email if interested.

Oops, just reread your msg more closely. It appears that the Troy/Auburn Hills ES is an all suite property, you add the sauna (it was broken at the Northville Hilton last week), whirlpool, probably much better exercise room, the evening receptions and breakfasts, you subtract the lack of an executive lounge in the Northville Hilton, I would probably go for the ES...IMHO

Have stayed at Troy Hilton properties more than twenty (20) times this year. Eighteen times at the Troy-ES and twice at the Northfield Hilton. Was on a first name basis with the staff at the Troy-ES by the end of this cycle.
The Northfield is a dilemma for me. First stay was just a regular room (all of them have balconies) facing the "inside" of this "curved/bowed" building. Note - the "inside" is AWAY from the freeway. Second trip was my second best ever room at a Hilton. They gave me a THREE ROOM SUITE in the top floor facing inside. Bedroom, dining room and living room with bath rooms off of the bed room and the living room. This fantastic deal is, I think, a fluke and not likely to happen again.
The Troy-ES is a "standard" ES property, although the outside architecture of the building is different from most ES. Inside is standard atrium with fountain, cafe (bad food), pool (very nice), exercise room (nice) and a bar (a real bar). There are eight "larger" suites at each of the four corners of this building. Two on each floor are smoking and six are not. Larger is relative, they are not hugely larger.
I recommend you stay at the Troy-ES because I believe it is a more "reliable" property in terms of getting what you expect. You should not have a surprises at this ES.
I am Diamond and always got my Diamond ES amenity. This is a very nice black box with two bottles of water; bag of chips and a Nutragrain bar. There was one other food item in this box, can't remember though.
Both properties are at the exit off the freeway. You want ES, turn left the the light; turn right for the Hilton. ES is harder to find since it is off the street a long ways. Hilton is very visible from the street.
ps - at ES ask for a room NOT on the freeway side. Good Luck.

I stayed at the Troy Hilton the day Hoffa disappeared.
I have no knowledge.

Just completed a stay at the Hilton. Room was okay and very large (was not upgraded as a Diamonod). However there is a lot of dead or wasted space.
The long curved hallway does produce a echo so anyone talking outside your room can easily be heard. Bottom line, if you're a light sleeper ask for a room at the end of the hall. There was no highway noise with my room that faced towards the parking lot. Apparently, there are rooms that face the highway. I would avoid those.
Free high-speed wireless access (in-room).
I would stay here again.

Kanderna, I would guess it would depend on what you are looking for. The Hilton has older rooms - the Hampton has just gone through their "Hampton Update" so the rooms are remodeled - new bedding - new bathrooms. Both have indoor pools, whirlpools, and exercise rooms. As a Diamond I have gotten bottles of water at the desk at the Hilton, and "Hampton Touch" of water and cookies in the room at the Hampton. Hilton will give you breakfast certificates to order off the menu at their restaurant, obviously the Hampton has their regular breakfast.
The properties are within a mile of each other, but if you stay at the Hilton you will want to make sure an get a map before you go - it can be a bit hard to figure out how to actually get to the property...

This property was initially a Guest Quarters hotel.

I just completed a mattress run a couple of months ago at the Southfield Hampton Inn and it has been newly updated, as stated earlier.
I would stay here again as the staff was friendly, my room was on the large size and breakfast was well stocked. The price was good at $59 (Hit the Road rate).

Just a couple of miles west (in Warren and Sterling Heights) there is a Hampton (Warren) and Hampton Inns & Suites (SH). I have stayed at both. Was treated very well at both, as a Diamond and a Gold. Got upgraded to jacuzzi room, which was a very good size.
Free breakfast at both, or course. At the Warren property, they served dinner Mon-Wed (complementary, including beer). They have an exercise room, but the pool is just a'building - probably ready by summer.
The HI&S is brand new, also has jacuzzi rooms - free b'kfst, no dinner (yet). Indoor pool and exercise room.
Locations are just off busy VanDyke, at 14 Mile and 16 Mile. Might fit your needs, might not.
Ooops - just noticed this thread is a couple of years old. Oh well. :(
