A friend of mine will be flying SFO-DUS-TXL on AB on September 30. Sadly, his attempt to fly SWISS was nixed by the company paying for the ticket.

I'm trying to figure out loads on the flight (or on airberlin flights out of SFO generally) to get a sense of what his experience will be like. I know it'll be a bit tough, already, as he's 6'3".

Unfortunately, seat maps for the flight just show big sections completely blocked, with smaller sections not occupied--so it's hard to read a load off of that.

Any advice on getting better seats--for example, via early check-in--or otherwise on making the best of 30-inch seat pitch for such a long flight? This is the first time I've known of anyone flying AB's SFO-DUS flight.

Don't know about the loads of these flights, sorry.

However, AB sells the emergency row seats as XL-seats for something like €60 o/w. This might be a good option for your friend for relatively little money!

Hi.

I only made the DUS-MIA/MIA-TXL flights and they were packed.

Exactly. You may think about purchasing the "Service Card", which gives you some discount (15 EUR OW) and you are allowed to take more luggage with you.

In contrast to most of the stories I hear from AirBerlin-TATL-travellers I had a quite good experience with them. The FA were very nice, the service was good and fast and the legroom in Y isn't worse than LH.

I heard that the A332 fleet will be epuipped with PTV. After this is completed I don't see a reason not to fly with AB.

Once AB joins OW, I am looking to flying this route. I just hope AB doesn't cancel it before then.

Cancellation of the routes to NA is very unlikely. IFE will be installed starting this fall from Rave: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/03/11/354274/air-berlin-selects-seat-centric-rave-ife-for-a330s.html . Be pepared for a nice C-Class as well :)

I'm wondering if AB will use the seats they planned to install back in 2007, or will they use another design.
