Good afternoon -

If I'm traveling to Dominica from the USA via San Juan, how does baggage work?

For example, I'm UA to San Juan and Liat to Dominica. In San Juan will I have to gather my bags and check them in again with Liat?

I know there are some specific weight issues Liat enforces and I would imagine the only way to do that is by having everyone check there bags again?

Anyone provide any insight?

...I'm UA to San Juan and Liat to Dominica. In San Juan will I have to gather my bags and check them in again with Liat?Yes.

LIAT operates a 100% Dash-8 fleet, mostly 50-seaters, but with a few 37-seaters. I mention this because there is limited space for carry on. LI also uses free-seating, mening there is sometimes a scramble (race) at boarding time in order to secure good seats.

IIRC, there are no interline agreements with LI, so you will need to claim bags in SJU, go landside, check-in for LI, and then go back through security to your gate. You can try to through check the bags at your originating UA airport, but I don't think it will work.

Have you been to DOM before? The airport is in the NE corner of the country, and the capital city Roseau is 1 hr 20 mins away in the SW corner. The road isn't that bumpy, but it is very twisty. Safe travels.

Never been to Dominicia, dropping the fiance off at Ross University. Looks to be an amazing island.

Thanks for the advice. This actually helps us because we want to switch one of our bags to family in SJU for the Liat flights(since your only allowed 1 50lb bag).

None the less, thanks again.
