Finnair Plus - Finn Air Carry-on Weight Restrictions

Finn Air’s web-site says that for economy flights your carry-on bags can weigh a max of 17.5 lbs. How strict are they with this requirement? At what point of the check-in process would they weigh your bag (or would they only weigh it if it looked suspicious)?

I have a OneWorld flight itinerary that originates in the USA & I’ll be flying the beginning leg of that journey with American Airlines. Since American Airlines doesn’t have a weight restriction for carry-on baggage, do you think that FinnAir will waive there restriction? FYI, I redeeming my American Airlines frequent flier miles for this particular flight itinerary.

Hi! The airline you're referring to is neither Finn Air nor FinnAir, but Finnair.

Carry-on bags do get some scrutiny while checking in, but are usually not weighed if they seem the correct size (max 56x45x25 cm). YMMV though as it is up to the individual check-in agent.

It seems that you will be checked through to the Finnair flight (???). In that case there is even less of a chance that your bag gets any extra attention.

Unless you are hauling something BIG, the chances of carry-on being weighted are very small to non-existent.

Agree with previous posters, only airline that actually has weighed my carry-on was Qantas.

My carry-on was weighed recently when flying LX PRG-GVA. My carry-on was 10kg and I was forced to check it in. The plane was a jumbolino which might have made a difference.

Ah, excellent point, I wasn't thinking about the regional jets.

I was checking-in for Helsinki-Bangkok a few weeks ago, and the agent weighed my carry-on and pointed out it was 8.3kg, 0.3kg above limit.

Really? Wow. Did they make you do some adjustments to your carry-on or were they lenient?

I was travelling with two colleagues on Finnair Y from HKG to HEL on Friday. All of our carry-ons were weighed.

My colleagues' bags weighed 12 and 13 kilos respectively. However, the agents asked whether they had laptops in their carry-on and, upon receiving an affirmative answer, they let us go. It appears that the 8 kg limit does not include computers.

Cheers,
T.

The policy is confusing especially if not followed.

"Business Class; Finnair Plus Platinum, Gold or Silver members; or Finnair Club members: a total of two pieces with a maximum combined weight of 10 kg (22 lb), consisting of one bag and one briefcase or laptop computer.

Economy Class or on oneclass flights, flights within Finland or leisure flights: one piece only with a maximum weight of 8 kg (17.5 lb)."

Max combined weight with the laptop is 10 kg and still 12-13 kg is "just fine" after inspection?

Compare with BA: "You are allowed one piece of hand baggage plus a laptop or handbag. 23kg (51lbs) maximum bag weight applies and you must be able to lift the bag into the overhead lockers in the aircraft cabin unaided."

Compare with KLM: "Economy Class ---may not exceed 12 kg (26 lbs), Business Class --- may not exceed 18 kg 40 lbs)."

So Finnair business is 10 kg, KLM 18 kg and BA 23 kg. 10 kg? With a laptop? That is hard to do, a decent 55x40x20 cabin luggage will weigh the 11-14 kg. Then you have your messenger with the laptop and you are nowhere near the 10 kg limit anymore.

10 kg is like a budget airline limit. Are the cabins that much different between Finnair, BA and KLM that there are safety issues?

AY should get rid of their double standard cabin luggage restrictions. As usual, it is size that should matter. And perhaps the 23 kg weigh limit per item.

I've flown several times in Y from/to CDG, SVO, LHR to/from HEL and I've never been bothered at the gate. But then, I always avoid checking in with an agent and use OLCI instead.

I connected ORD-HEL-KBP in May. AA ORD-HEL, then AY HEL-KBP. I arrived in and remained inside the non-Schengen area. After using the Finnair lounge for about 90 minutes, I made my way to the bus gate (Gate 38d, ground floor of terminal) to my RJ (Embraer 170) flight. There was no scale at the gate, and therefore no way for AY to have checked the weight of my bag, which was legal size but more like 14 kgs (legal on American, too heavy on AY).

Before I made my decision of what and how to pack, I asked for advice from readers here and was told that there was no way for the airline to check carry-on bag weights behind security (i.e. at the gate), as no one had even seen a scale at the gates. However, I was also advised that someone checking in at Vantaa Airport lobby with checked and cabin luggage might be scrutinized and found to have an overweight bag. I suppose for those with carry-on luggage only, the way to beat the system would be on-line check-in and skip the lobby counter.

I flew HEL-TLL on Fincomm (ATR prop plane) with a fairly heavy carry-on and nobody gave me a second look. At HEL I was already behind security and I didn't see any scales at the gate. At TLL I just used an airport Kiosk to check in and didn't see any scales at the gate.

I suppose if it really became a problem you could go into the restroom, put on multiple layers of clothing and shove what items you could in your pockets. :)
