Title is a bit off, all Fairmont dogs are my favorites but I just didn't want folks thinking this thread is about bringing pets to Fairmonts.

We've discussed many things on this Fairmont forum but I think "mans best friend" should have it's own thread.

I'm not entirely sure on the history of how this started but I have to say I have really enjoyed spending time with each of the white labs I've walked. I think it was the Waterfront in Vancouver who stared this and when I read about it the first time oh so many years ago I initially thought it was a PR kinda thing.

However nowadays I actually enjoy surprising my friends/family who stay at the hotel also with this unusual perk. I usually joke and say the next hotel we are staying at rents dogs! It becomes a good laugh after the stay ends for years to come since they really thought I was BSing.

My favorite experience has to be last year during the Olympics. I crashed a few nights at a friends condo. One day a lady walked into the elevator with a white lab so I ended up striking up a conversation how I love taking the Hotel Vancouver dog out for walks. Slowly I piece things together and I recognize her and the dog and got way too excited knowing I've actually walked her dog before.

Any others stories about these Fairmont four legged employees?

Mavis and Beau at the Hotel Vancouver are both exceptional canine concierges. Walking through the lobby one day after an afternoon at the 900 West Lounge and both dogs were standing in the middle of the floor watching patrons pass by. My wife and I stop to pet them, and Mavis smells dog biscuits in her pocket (we had been out walking our own dog a few hours earlier). She gives one to Mavis, who then proceeds to follow us into the Fairmont gift shop then into the entrance of the adjoining Louis Vuitton store. Beau stayed back to tend to their workstation.

Both Hotel Vancouver dogs, and I believe the majority of Fairmont dogs, are drop-outs from guide dog programs. They have the right disposition and temperament but for whatever reason were not quite cut out for that career.

You are correct, The Fairmont Waterfront was the first property to introduce a canine ambassador. It was way back in 2002 and his name was Morgan. He received a lot of exposure during the Queen's Jubilee that year when Queen Elizabeth II stopped and gave him the "royal pat".

There are 11 canine ambassadors at 9 different hotels (http://www.fairmont.com/promotions/canineambassadors) - photos of the two dogs at Fairmont Mount Kenya are missing from this page.
