I read a ton of posts which helped but didn't completely answer my questions, so I'm hoping to tap into the knowledgebase of my FT colleagues:

I'm planning my second trip to India this winter.

Last January, with my MSN-MSP-CDG-DEL routing, our luggage spent an extra, romantic day in Paris (we were at the tail-end of the massive CDG luggage fiasco from the snowstorms). Our bags got to DEL a day or 2 later. Not a big problem, since we were staying in DEL for a few days.

Next February, we may not have the luxury of staying at our international arrival point for a few days for our luggage to catch up to us. If I fly MSN-MSP-CDG-BLR or -DEL, and then fly onward to HYD or MAA on IT/9W, what happens if my bags get stuck in Europe, and I'm already off to another city? Would AF forward them to wherever I'm at, or do I somehow have to get back to my international arrival point to get them?

Aggressive use of rollabords is definitely part of the plan, but between the two of us, we'll probably still have to check one bag with a few less-important items.

Many thanks for the advice!

A couple of winters ago, my bag spent a couple of extra days with AF in CDG, while I flew LHR-CDG-BOM on AF and then a domestic BOM-GOI on a separate ticket a day later. I provided the address of my final destination in GOI when filling in the delayed baggage form and AF delivered the bag to my final destination 3-4 days later using AI for the domestic leg. IIRC, I had to give them the combination to my lock for customs inspection on arrival in BOM.

With my Amex travel insurance, it was a blessing as I think I went shopping in BOM for about £600.

OK thanks, Savage. I didn't realize they would forward bags beyond the arrival point. Fortunately, other than the bags missing a flight in CDG or AMS once, I haven't really had baggage problems much.

The airlines will forward it to anywhere you want them to send it. Home delivery to a village may not be possible but as long as its in a decent range of an airport with regular scheduled service you will be fine.

they will forward it to pretty much where ever you are....i had this happen to me last year when kingfisher misplaced my luggage....i was on a kingfisher flight from hkg-bom & then a day later on a jet flight from bom-del....they forwarded my luggage to del a day later....

Wow thanks, everyone. That's really helpful to know and definitely makes the trip-logistics a lot easier.
