Mid-Atlantic - Hotels Nearest John Hopkins - main campus?

Anyone with recommendations for hotels near JH? Would like something within walking distance if possible. Initial visit will just be in/out, so straight hotel room is ok, but longer visits may be needed shortly so a Residence Inn / Homewood Suite type recommendation would also be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

My son used to go to the hospital there frequently, and we live about 45 minutes from that. It's actually in a really crappy area of town, so I'd stay nearby with a car if possible. You can stay at the inner harbour of Baltimore, or is you can afford the drive time, in a nearby suburb or near the airport may be better with more choices (like if you want a Residence Inn type place). I do think there may be a Residence Inn at the inner harbour - I forget!

Contact the hospital directly. They will have a list and probably have prefered hospital patient rates negotiated with some of the hotels.

sophiegirl, if you're going to be near the Hop, it's Johns Hopkins. That was the man's name afterall. ;)

sophiegirl mentioned the main campus which is Homewood, not the hospital in East Baltimore. There is the Cross Keys Inn in Roland Park which is a 7 minute drive from Homewood; that's where we stayed in April. It's a 3* Radisson property now but it's been there for decades. Across the street from the Hop is the Colonnade but it is overpriced. You can priceline a hotel near Homewood easily. It's the region called "University".

I go to JH fairly frequently and stay at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront. I'll be there tomorrow night. But, if you're there for any length of time, there is a Fairfield Inn and Suites as well as a Residence Inn within about a 5 minute drive. Some hotels give discounts to JH patients. JH does have a list of hotels where you can get a discounted rate.

You've had some good recommendations already, so I won't make sugggestions. However, I'm not too far away, so if you need anything during your visits, or want a home-cooked meal, you can feel free to PM me.

stayed the other week for 1 night at Hiltons new Home2Suites its off of St Paul, the good thing if you have HH pts its only 7500 pts per night, the bad its just North of Inner Harbour, free parking I think it was 7pm-7am on the street otherwise there are meters and no parking certain hours in the morn I guess to keep traffic flowing or it was $169 a GREAT deal for those pts

If you're talking about the hospital, then perhaps looking for something along the metro might be ideal... there is a Shot Tower stop that is close to a Fairfield Inn... in addition, I think that the Home2 Suites is near the Charles Center stop...

That being said, I see that you're a HH Gold.. Harbor East has a couple of options including a HGI and a Homewood Suites. Nice location, not too far from hospital.. they might even run a shuttle....

The area around the hospital isn't great for sure....

If the Homewood campus then that's a different story...

Staying in the Inner Harbor area and cabbing it is your best bet. The campus itself is safe, but don't venture outside of the areas patrolled by security.

The inner harbor area is nice but do not stay up the hill in the downtown area, for example the Omni. I remember a rather upscale hotel on the edge of the Johns Hopkins main campus that had condos too, but I cannot remember the name. It was convenient and pleasant.

That sounds like the Inn at the Colonnade, alluded to in post #5. It is, indeed, convenient, pleasant, and at times overpriced. Prices do tend to vary depending on University events (move-in week, parents' weekend, graduation, homecoming, etc).

You obviously had much more disposable income than I did in my Hopkins days... or maybe I just took too many uni mini runs :p

If you haven't already done so, the suggetion to get a list of hotels from JH is a good one. They have special rates at many hotels in the area. They have a standard list, with map, and general indication of rates. You have to phone the hotels for exact rates and availability. You can sometimes get cheaper on your own, but not always. Hotels in the downtown area would be most convenient, but can be pricey. Some provide free shuttle or taxi vouchers to get to JH, especially the main hospital (which I assume is where you'll be).

Be sure to eat at the Ambassador Dining Room. Great Indian food.

Definitely agree if you're looking for "white tablecloth" Indian food. If you want something much more casual and a bit cheaper, Tamber's (formerly known as Nifty Fifties) Diner has some fantastic Indian food as well as a very decent crab cake sandwich (and a full complement of other diner items which are probably best ignored).

One of many things that has changed in Charles Village in the last few years.

No Indian at Nifty Fifties is definitely before my time. I do, however, remember the days pre-brick-and-marble walkways on campus. And sadly, there is no longer (nor has there been for a while) an Edo Sushi in Levering either :(

The bookstore (Barnes & Noble) was in the basement of Gilman next to the post office.

The Hut was open 24/7 with big leather chairs as well as the long tables and chairs.

Coffee was sold outside of the Hut just inside of Gilman

The grass wasn't as paved as it is now

Bloomberg just opened

Movies were at Schaefer Hall on weekends

Admissions was in Garland

McCoy and Wolman Halls were dives

We had Housemasters, not RAs.

MSE closed at midnight

Garages on campus? Are you kidding? :D

The Hopkins Garage was on a side street just up from 33rd St. Forgot which street.

I realize we've sort of hijacked this thread, but until the people decry...

it's amazing how little has changed between your time and mine (see edited list above), and how much has changed between my time and now.

the sushi must not have been there very long... I enjoyed it the day I visited campus as a prefrosh, got all excited about it, and found out that it had closed when I arrived in the fall :(

It was quite high quality... 3 Edo branches still exist in Baltimore and (to bring the post back-ish onto topic), they still serve very good sushi.

I was just going to suggest that perhaps the posts discussing how things have changed could be pulled off into their own little thread. :)
