I am looking at booking a stay of 2 months next summer in Santa Barbara. The goal is to find a higher end room, preferrably a bungalow or suite style property in a good central/near beach location.
Has anybody any suggestion, where & how to find such an accommodation?

The El Encanto (http://www.clicksantabarbarahotels.com/el_encanto_hotel_and_villas.html) fits the bill, but it is currently closed for renovations (http://www.elencantohotel.com/).

How about a rental house or condo instead?

Good suggestion, but in this case daily housekeeping, and option for occasional room service is preferred.

The Santa Barbara Biltmore (http://laist.com/2010/04/13/the_four_seasons_the_biltmore_santa.php?gallery0Pi c=2#photo-2) has single story cottages.

I'd email the folks at the Four Seasons, Doubletree, Hotel Mar Monte, and Pacifica Suites to see what they can do for you. The Doubletree is probably the best option for being both higher end, and centrally located. Four Seasons is probably the nicest in the area, but a bit further from downtown.
When were you looking to come?

Thanks all for the interesting suggestions. Timeframe is mid-July to mid-Sept 2012.

Personally, I like

Keep your eye on it in case something comes up. Residents will occasionally offer up their furnished places for short-term leases.
Not on the beach, but a fantastic place chock-full of history:

And vrbo has some good choices. You can always hire daily maid service.
