Hilton HHonors - Have stay 8/31 to 9/1. Which credit card to use???

Is the stay counted on the day you arrive or the day you leave? Which promo does this stay count for and do I charge with Visa or Amex??!

Sabrina of HHonors Customer Service tells me that the stay date is the date of arrival. Aug 31 is an AMEX stay! Actually, the logic below covers it as well, still making it AMEX. Thanks to all the respondents!

I asked that very same question and here is HHonors response (before I learned of the Visa promo). Perhaps I should send another e-mail asking if it counts towards the 9/1 Visa promo:

Thank you for your e-mail.

No, you will not receive the promotional credit for this stay.

Best regards,
Scott

I am considering making a reservation at an Embassy Suites
checking in on August 31 and departing September 3 with an
American Express card.

My question is:

The below promo goes through August 31. Will I still get
double points/miles for this stay?

Will I get double points for the entire three nights or just
the night of August 31?

Thanks,

In the past HHonors CSRs have told me that for other stuff (such as a 4-stay quarterly bonus) what matters is the day you check out, not the day you check in.

Would it help to split the stay into two separate reservations/stays, the first paid with Amex and the second paid with Visa on each of the respective checkout days?

THE BEST BET IS TO PAY WITH AX. AS LONG AS ONE DAY OF YOUR STAY IS IN THE PROMOTIONAL PERIOD, YOU WILL GET CREDIT FOR ALL DAYS IN THE STAY. IF YOU PAY WITH VISA, IT WILL BE CONSIDERED YOUR ACTIVATING STAY, AND YOU WILL GET ONLY REGULAR POINTS AND MILES. IF YOU PAY WITH AX, YOU WILL GET DOUBLE POINTS AND MILES IF YOU HAVE DOUBLE DIP STAY(IE. YOU MUST HAVE A FF# ON ACCT).

I am glad this question has been asked - I have a tsya starting on 8/31 and ending on 9/3.

I plan on paying with AMEX based on what I am reading here.

Very good question.

Either Chani or Scott (see above email) from HHonors is incorrect.

Scott said in his e-mail reply to me that we would not get promo credit for the AMEX promo coming in on 8/31 for 3 nights (see above).

Adam - Could you please confirm which HHonors representative is correct?

If the stay is based on departure, then splitting the 4 night stays would not help because you are still departing Sep 1. There has to be a system or the computer would have no idea how to apply the points. I never heard of its counting either way you want it. I am OK about its being my qualifying stay for the new promo - I just want for it to count. If I get the credit card wrong, I could end up with its not counting for either promo! What a nuisance!

Karen2:

Congrats on your 1,000th post.

I had my 4th stay under the EWRDC promo on the last (90th) qualifying day. I was not sure whether it would count as the 4th stay. I checked twice with Hilton CS and got the same answer: The check-in date is what matters. My 20K point bonus for the 4th stay posted a few days later.

I would think the same logic would apply in Karen2's case. Checking-in on 8/31 would count as a stay under the AMEX double points promo. Should confirm with CS though.

Thanks for the congrats, MileBoy! I meant to take note of my 1000th post but missed it in my enthusiasm for the info.

Double Ponts/Miles Promotion (Which One For 8/31 to 9/3 Stay)
---------------------------------

Dear Mr. _ _ _ _ -

Very good question! When two promotions run back to back and you have a
stay that runs through both of them, you get the benefits of both
promotions on that one stay.

I would suggest you pay with American Express for your stay to solidify
the
benefits of the Summer Promotion. Since the fall promotion does not
award
the 1,000 bonus points for paying with Visa on the initial stay, you
won't
be losing any bonus opportunity. Also, you do not have to pay with Visa
on
your first stay of the promotion to earn the 1,000 bonus points for your
subsequent stays during the September 1-November 15, 2001 promotional
period. Just make sure that all stays after are paid with Visa.

I hope this makes sense. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you
have
any additional concerns. I will follow-up with agent who initially
responded to ensure that this is understood for any future inquiries.

Sincerely,

Kristy Hall

Part two to my question. In my recent statement another promotion
begins
9/1:

Thanks for posting this since I was about to
send then an e-mail about the card to be used for the first stay. Being that I will get (card) points for Amex or Diners payment
but nothing for the Visa card itself.
Another consideration for this promo is that depending on the amount on your folio, use of Amex or Diners may get you more value as compared to the 1000 Hilton bonus points as I understand it we will still get the double mile even without the use of a Visa.

I am fairly new at this, however I do have 900,000 plus HH points and 135 nights in 2001. So, in determining what card is better (AMEX or Visa) I believe it should be based on the total dollar amount you expect to pay. Am I correct that you receive 5 points for each dollar spent at a Hilton property when using the the AMEX card. If this is true, a total hotel bill of $500 charged on AMEX would generate 2,500 HH points as opposed to only 1,000 with the Visa bonus. Please correct me if may assumptions are inaccurate. As I mentioned, I'm somewhat of a neophyte at this. Thanks.

26miles -- If Citibank HHonors Visa Card is used, it earns 3 points per $ spent at HHonors hotels, and $500 hotel bill would generate $500 x 3 = 1,500 points plus 1,000 bonus points, the same as AmEx HHonors would yield. Thus, $500 folio is a "breakpoint amount", provided one has to choose between HHonors AmEx and HHonors Visa cards. A smaller amount would be better charged to Visa, and larger than $500 amount would make more sense to charge to AmEx.

You know, FlyerTalk continues to amaze me to no end. I was about to post on this, and there's already a Big Official Answer. The quality of inquiry one finds on here is just plain stellar,

Incidentally, i'm posting this from a silly LodgeNet term at the Hampton in Carlstadt, NJ. Pretty darn good for 65 bucks, i must say...well, plus ten for this. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It's my 20k bonus stay on EWRDC, and it's saving me from having to be awake at 6:00 because they're installing sprinklers in my dorm room...
