Apparently China Eastern Airlines is flying direct to/from China (Shanghai) from August 9 on. The flight will run twice a week. This is the first time a regularly scheduled flight is going from America (Honolulu) to China. As most of you know you had to previously fly through Japan or Korea to get to China.

Gotta wonder how this shapes Hawaiian Airlines Asia strategy. Perhaps we will see a Hong Kong route.

My apologies for this inquiry but what about Air China's nonstop routes such as:
Beijing - San Francisco
Beijing - Los Angeles
Beijing - New York
These are all China - US routes as well. I think you meant in your OP, China - Hawaii/US, yes?

Some folks refer to HA's "Asia strategy" as the "Dunkerley International Maneuver" (or "DIM" for short). Open new routes, charge more than the competition for an inferior product, and hope that the company becomes attractive enough for a merger or takeover. ;)

Sorry tony, apparently I'm ignorant to the US-China connection, I thought you had to always go through Japan or Korea to get to China. HA's strategy is very concerning as I at least wonder whether they are expanding too quickly.

No problem! By the looks of your post and post #4, you've received interesting responses. ;)

Is this the same as the charter flight from Shanghai that's supposed to be operating now or soon?
The bigger barrier to China tourism to the US are the burdensome US Visa requirements including the interview.
