My husband and I stayed at the Mainz Hilton on Saturday night. There are two Hiltons in Mainz; this is the one on the river next to the conference center and Old Town.

We were very pleased with the hotel's recognition of my gold status. We were upgraded to a very comfortable junior suite. We had been in the room about 15 minutes when a porter arrived with an elegant fruit bowl and iced down bottle of wine.

The hotel has no club floor; we had a weekend rate of 225DM that included breakfast. Parking cost 30DM/day.

The hotel needs to refurbish the furniture in the lobby. It was quite shabby. Yet, our room furniture was very modern and fresh. There was no health club open at the time of our stay; we were told that one was opening on August 28. We ate at the River Cafe, a pleasant location just outside the hotel overlooking the Rhine River.

The hotel supplied detailed instructions on how to make an internet connection. With the explanation, it was simple. I was carrying a German telephone adapter, which I needed at every hotel where I stayed on the trip. I also needed to correct my modem for pulse dialing; one tower at the hotel used pulse, the other used tone. I use a compuserve account with a local German number; Hilton did not charge me for the phone call. I stayed at hotels earlier nights where I paid up to $20/night for access to the same Compuserve number.

The hotel location was excellent. We walked a few blocks into old Mainz, to the Guttenberg Museum and the impressive Dom. We also walked along the riverfront, where there were several ticket booths for trips on the Rhine.

A lot of flight crews, such as Delta, Varig, and Quantas, use this hotel. The hotel is closer to the Frankfurt Airport than Frankfurt itself is.

We were well content with the Hilton for the reasons given above.
