Appreciate any help with getting a rental car in Ithaca or nearby on 13 August for drop off at La Guardia on 16 August. All sites I have tried tell me "none available" but maybe someone has local knowledge - hope so

Welcome to FT :)

I'm going to move this over to our NYC destination forum, where the locals there may be able to assist.

Doesn't look good. You might want to look into a flight or bus instead.

Expedia is showing cars available from Binghamton which isn't too far, but you're not going to like the price. Is there any way to rearrange so you don't have to do a one-way rental?

Unfortunately, I think you waited too long to book. I booked my one-way from ITH to LGA over a month ago for August 14, renting from Budget. When I double-checked rates a few weeks ago, I saw that one-ways were now sold out.

If you absolutely must have a car for the drive to NYC, you might have to pick it up in another city. Hertz at ELM and BGM is offering a mid-size for that rental period for $50/day plus 30 cents/mile, plus taxes and fees, using the Virgin Atlantic frequent-flyer CDP number 1040618. If you don't have transportation to get to another city, you can take the morning bus from the Ithaca bus station to SYR airport, but the rates there are higher. (There is public transportation from the Ithaca Commons and Cornell to ELM airport, but it is only available Monday-Friday mornings.)

Other possibilities are renting a small truck one way from U-Haul or Budget Truck Rental, both on Elmira Road in Ithaca.

Feel free to send me a private message if you need details re: the public transportation options.

Welcome to FlyerTalk, icme! :)

The bus suggestion is a good one - check out this thread from our Sticky at the top of the forum:

In particular, check out the Cornell Campus-to-Campus bus service (I am not sure if you need to be affiliated with Cornell to use it - there is no clarity on that on the website, so you might have to call or just try to reserve.)

Just a guess, but I suspect that the OP is relocating from ITH, and may have too much stuff to go by bus. (A lot of Ithaca leases end in August.)

If a bus is a possibility, one can currently get afternoon departures on the 16th from Ithaca to NYC on Short Line for $23.00: the trick is to buy a ticket from Ithaca to Binghamton for $12.50, after securing a Megabus ticket from Binghamton to NYC for $10.50. Megabus uses the same Short Line bus that begins in Ithaca for this route, so it's effectively a one-seat ride for $23.00. For example, the 2:50 PM Short Line from Ithaca to NYC via Binghamton is the 4:10 PM Megabus/Short Line departure from Binghamton to NYC.

I would call individual rental counters in Ithaca (not the 800 reservations line) and ask. OW rentals are limited and extremely expensive, particularly to NYC, but it's possible that a given counter (some are franchisees) will do it for you.

I would also check drop offs at other locations near LGA (even non-airport). Worst case is that you drop off at LGA, drive somewhere and cab back to airport.

Lastly, must you fly from ITH? You may find OW rental costs exceeds other options.

If you really need the car, and you're willing to bite the bullet (probably $200 extra, maybe more), you can just rent at ITH, with a return to ITH, and then just drop it off in NYC. Hertz won't refuse to take the car, but they will charge you a pretty brutal one-way drop fee.

Check the penalties for this. Far more than $200.

As ridiculous as it sounds, your least bad option might be a one-way rental Ithaca-Binghamton and then another Binghamton-LGA (or Syracuse instead of Binghamton). If the BGM-LGA is priced with a high per-day fee rather than a drop-off charge it won't be so bad for just two days.

Well, the other end is in NYC :)The issue is availability in ITHACA, not LGA. :D Ithaca isn't even remotely close to being a suburb of NYC; I know you know that. 4+ hours! ;)

The OP specifically asked for LOCAL assistance. :)

I would assume that availability is based on both the pickup and dropoff location for a one-way rental. That's certainly true for rates - for example, picking a couple of random dates at National, ITH-LGA is $450 base rate while ITH-ALB is $2338 for a midsize.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But you are right that the OP asked for "Local" assistance, and now that this thread has had some time to percolate in the NYC Forum we can move it to the parent Mid-Atlantic Forum to see the OP gets more advice there. :)
