TalkBoard Topics - Why I won't be standing for re-election to TalkBoard

As I mentioned in another thread I will not be standing for re-election to TalkBoard when the elections come in the autumn/fall.

Let me first say that I believe that the people who serve on TB do so because they genuinely feel that they have something to contribute to FT, and for that they are owed our thanks. Without a desire to support FT they would never spend their free time discussing topics of import to members.

My departure stems from frustrations, which are many, as some of you will have detected from some of my posts.

Greatest is the 'everything in the garden is rosy' group who never support any change on the basis that FT is great already I assume. I agree it's pretty good, but to be honest there is a lot we could do better or smarter. Even if we tried a modest change and then changed back, it wouldn't be a bad thing in my view. Many ideas don't pan out as well, or as badly, as people expect, but if we never try it we'll never know.

This is pretty much followed up by TB members who don't post their opinions but vote for "no change". It's impossible to get a motion through with the current 2/3rd requirement unless it's agreed in advance of being posted. If members don't express their views they how can this occur? Motions, in my view, pass more by luck than judgement.

I am also disappointed that some of the suggestions that I've made have not passed - some - to increase democracy in the election of TB officers - seemed no brainers to me, but were voted down. I have got over this and moved on, but it's a disappointing position for the TB to take.

I'll continue to see my term out, voting and participating as now. I hope I have something left to contribute over the next three months.

Let me wish the TB well after my departure. I hope that the new intake of members come the elections will be able to make this place better. If anyone is thinking of standing and wants any information about how TB works just PM me.

In closing I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me in the elections in which I have participated. Your support has been the reason that I have jousted at the windmills. Two thumbs up to the membership! ^^

This is disappointing news to me, as I was eager to vote for you in the next election.

Thank you for your continuing service to FT, in the TB role and otherwise.

Why not consider standing yourself? Seems like a good idea to me!

Although you & I have disagreed in the past on things, I do appreciate your always honest and well thought out view points - as well as your participation.

Thanks for your service as well! ^^

I empathize. I felt precisely the same way you do when I served on the TB. The forces of the status quo are overwhelmingly strong on the TB, even to small 'no-brainer' changes. :(

It DOES help to step away from banging one's head against a brick wall from time to time, so best wishes to you.

Markie,

It's been a pleasure serving with you as well. We've disagreed on some things, agreed on many, but I've appreciated your drive to see FlyerTalk change and improve. I look forward to the remaining time we have to work together and hope we can look back and say we tried our hardest to leave FlyerTalk in good stead when our terms are up.

I hope OP still engages in TB debates on this forum as have many other former board members as I have come to appreciate their opinion.

Thanks for your community service to date. :)

Why not consider standing yourself? Seems like a good idea to me!

For the same reasons that I am considering not even voting in the next TB election. If circumstances were different, then the level of willingness would be different.

Let's just say that some of the same reasons that some current or former TB members have decided not to stand in some FT position(s) held (currently or previously) has influenced me so as to consider not even voting in the next TB election.

Retirement beckons everyone some day. For some of us, more than once.
