TalkBoard Topics - Does TB have any influence over titles on FT?

A variety of FTers have titles such as "FlyerTalk Evangelist", "FlyerTalk Posting Legend", and "Fontaine d'honneur du Flyertalk" that get triggered by hitting X0,000 posts. Can TB introduce more such titles or eliminate any or all such titles?

I would guess that they could definitely make a recommendation. And just like with forum creations/removals, if FT "management" agrees, it will happen, if it doesn't it won't.

Of course, 2/3rds or more of TB would need to agree on a change to titles and what those changes should be before they could make an "official" recommendation.

And whether that can happen or not would be interesting to see. ;)

AFAIK, Randy & HOM came up with these titles & thresholds...

I've indicated that I would vote in favour of a motion to remove titles based on post-count.

Including "Fontaine d'honneur du Flyertalk" at 10,000 posts? That would be rather a big surprise to me.

Am sure some out there treat these honorifics (and trying to reach them specifically) as a goal, akin to MM status :)

I frankly couldn't care less...

10k posts is (normally) an achievement regardless if there is a title connected, and removal of such may clean up a bit. Post count titles doesnt really add any value, and this is not a teenage kid IBB.

Historical note: up until the fall of 2000, one gained the user-title of "FlyerTalk Evangelist" by posting >250 posts!

The topic is (in) this thread, and it's not an FTer. In this thread I am not discussing other threads and how others approach other threads.

So far I am still awaiting an answer, from TB/TB members about the following:

"Can TB introduce more such titles or eliminate any or all such titles?"

Maybe they could introduce a new title, "Flyertalk Fantasist".

It sounds like a perfectly reasonable request to me.

It is within the TB's purview to do either.

Or use the list from bmi signup

I think "FlyerTalk Viscountess" has a nice ring.

Yes. You came to the right place to discuss this.

Maybe we just need DIFFERENT titles. Here's something I posted a few years ago. Reality-based monikers would have a progression like this:

FT Newbie
FT Lurker
FT Tortoise
FT Searcher
FT Explorer
FT Contributor
FT Loudmouth
FT Slut
FT Addict
FT Obsessive

:D

BTW, everyone posting here qualifies at least for the Addict level. :p

If they exist, it should be easily published what they are and the significance.

Otherwise, I'm fine with them going away.

+1

My suggestion would be to make the titles LESS flattering at a certain point:

<180 FT Lurker

180-10,000 FT Poster

10,000-20,000 FT Fanatic

20,000-30,000 FT Over poster

30,000-50,000 FTer with a serious posting issue

50,000 + FTer with no life

Another thought: why not reset post counts to zero every January 1, just like all the EQM and EQS counts do!?

Evangelist = 10k posts
Posting Legend = 30k posts
Original Member = joined in May 1998

All others are elected or appointed titles; Moderator, Ambassador, TalkBoard, Company Representative, etc.

Posting Legend is 30k? I thought it was 40k.

Apparently there have been at least two titles granted for 10k posts.

It's an interesting and diverse list. To continue on the religious theme a la Evangelist how about "FT Rabbi" for hitting 60k or 75k posts?

I have seen a very few (less than ten, probably more like 3-4) members with special titles. I always assumed Randy had had a hand in bestowing those special "honors."

I believe SanDiego1K also has recently bestowed such honors recently on the BA board. I think it is a nice touch to honor people who have added value to the community. If anything, I think the thresholds are too high for the titles.

And, FWIW, I'm pretty sure I'm the only member to ever make it to Posting Legend without ever being titled as an Evangelist. :-:

I was a mod when I crossed the 10K line so my title was just my moderator forums. When I was fired as a mod I was already over 40K so I reverted to the appropriate title at that time.

I don't think it is, especially when one has other titles in the field (which, in my case, is ok with me).

Unless there was some kind of way to indicate post quality, post counts don't mean much to me. There are some members who just seem to post to every thread they read, with posts as useful as "kilroy was here".

It's only 85 posts or so until the 10,000 mark is hit and then it becomes clear whether that results in FT Evangelist, something else or nothing at all as a title.

Then I'll take "Liquidator." There already is a Van Brunt Street here. :)

Serious question: Can one refuse a title? I do not want "evangelist" at any point.

Yes, contact the Community Director to make this request. I would do this slightly before you reach 10,000 posts; I believe it's a manual process to make the change.

At the time I started this thread, I was also thinking of opening a thread to see if TB has influence over undoing forum re-organizations -- including undoing creation of forum sub-forums -- but I postponed it. And now I don't see what the point is in asking since the limitations of TB's influence are whatever they are when it comes to that too.

Then I'll take "Liquidator." There already is a Van Brunt Street here. :)

Yes, it's been done repeatedly. One way to currently do so involves doing as suggested above.

However, about getting "unique" titles -- such as that which you'd take -- I'm not sure how consistent responses to such requests are.

My opinion is that re-organization of subforums for the purpose of improving ability to moderate are outside the TalkBoard's scope. If the purpose is to improve ability to access information, that's within the TalkBoard's scope. If both purposes are present, I think the Community Director needs to take the primary role.
